On March 24, 1996, Lola Beltran, a beloved Mexican singer and actress, passed away at Hospital Angeles in Mexico City due to a stroke. Her music and voice had a profound impact on a diverse group of young vocalists, both in Mexico and beyond.

Lola was renowned for her mariachi ballads, as well as her ability to record over 100 albums and deliver powerful vocal expression through her phrasing, cadence, tone, and soulful delivery.

Lola Beltran Ruiz, who was born on March 7th, 1932, was a renowned Mexican actress and singer known for her unique voice in genres such as Huapango and Ranchera. Throughout Mexico, her vocal talent was unmatched.

After being inspired by the church choir, she discovered her passion for ballads. In order to pursue her dream, she and her mother relocated to Mexico City, where she embarked on her career.

Lola was known for her love of extravagant attire, often adorned with jewels, dresses, and other regal accessories. This earned her the nickname ‘La Reina’, meaning ‘The Queen’.

Lola Beltran: Death and Legacy

On March 16, 1996, Lola The Great experienced a heart attack and was admitted to the hospital. Thanks to the efforts of the doctors, who reported that her heart had stopped beating for seven minutes, she was successfully revived.

Shortly thereafter, she stated and I quote:

“I fought death with all my might, and God in his infinite compassion has let me live for a little while longer “

Despite her promise to herself and her fans to continue singing for as long as her body would allow, tragedy struck on March 24, 1996 when she passed away at Angeles Hospital due to a pulmonary embolism – a blood clot in the lungs that caused a blockage.

Her body was displayed in the Rotunda of ‘Palacio De Bellas Artes’ as an honor. This same platform has also commemorated numerous poets, artists, and renowned personalities.

Despite the passing of time, Lola Beltran, the most successful ranchera artist in history, remains a source of inspiration for future generations of musicians.

Lola’s 92nd birthday was recently celebrated by Google Doodle, in which they stated:

“This Doodle celebrates Mexican singer and actress Lola Beltrán. The legendary artist breathed new life into classic songs and helped make Mexican ranchera music a popular genre around the world. She inspired generations of Mexican singers to embrace folk music and sing about their authentic experience.”

Despite her passing, Lola Beltran’s legacy will live on forever as her music and performances will continue to inspire future generations. May she rest in peace.
