Microsoft is taking significant strides in enhancing Windows 11 by refining its critical components, most notably by scaling back the integration of Copilot. One of the focal points of this improvement is the widely used File Explorer. The tech giant has announced an upcoming major update aimed at improving File Explorer’s performance, addressing issues such as ‘white flashes, ’ and introducing the support for new archive formats.

The latest iteration, Windows 11 Build 26200.8313, is now available to testers in the Release Preview Channel. After a 24-hour test period, observations reveal notable speed improvements in File Explorer, alongside the resolution of the irritating white background flashes experienced in dark mode.

This version is currently exclusive to Windows Insiders, with the enhancements slated for public release in the optional update of April 2026. For those not opting for monthly updates, improved File Explorer performance, along with various bug fixes, will be included in the comprehensive May 2026 Patch Tuesday update.

The Patch Tuesday update is set to launch on May 12, 2026, at 10 AM PT, marking a significant milestone for users eager to experience these upgrades.

Enhanced Performance and Visual Stability in File Explorer

The improvements in File Explorer offer a palpable sense of speed, particularly noticeable the first time it is opened post-boot. In earlier builds, users found File Explorer’s performance particularly sluggish on lower-end devices, exacerbated by prolonged loading times.

Previously, the loading process could take several seconds, even on repeated attempts. Fortunately, the recent preview updates indicate a significant uptick in loading efficiency. Unlike previous attempts where preloading was tested to mitigate load times, this update appears to have optimized the Explorer functionality itself.

Moreover, the imminent update will introduce support for various new archive formats, including xar and nupkg, allowing users to seamlessly extract files from these formats directly within File Explorer. Microsoft also plans to extend this archive support and enhance performance in future updates.

Another noteworthy enhancement in this build is the improved reliability of explorer.exe processes. These changes are likely to contribute to an overall increase in Windows 11 stability, reducing issues such as lagging or crashing taskbar and system tray functionalities when File Explorer is closed or during system boot-up.

This week’s preview build aims to refine the user experience further, especially in interactions involving taskbar interfaces and Task View. Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that unpinning items from the File Explorer Quick Access menu has been made more dependable since the update.

Alongside these core performance enhancements, Microsoft is rolling out several new features in File Explorer:

  • Users will now have the ability to preview internet-downloaded files by selecting ‘Preview anyway.’
  • The search bar’s design aligns more closely with the overall aesthetics of Windows 11.
  • Folder view settings will now persist when accessing the same folder via different applications, correcting previous inconsistencies.
