Microsoft Discontinues Clipchamp iOS App, Confirms Windows 11 Video Editor Will Remain

In September 2021, Microsoft expanded its portfolio by acquiring Clipchamp, an Australia-based video editing platform, integrating it into the Microsoft 365 suite. Despite initial optimism regarding Clipchamp’s future, recent announcements have raised concerns about the app’s viability, especially for iOS users.

Microsoft has officially confirmed the discontinuation of the Clipchamp app for iOS, directing users to transition to the desktop version. If you currently access Clipchamp on an iOS device, a warning notification will prompt you to take necessary actions to safeguard your projects before they are permanently lost.

Reasons Behind the Discontinuation

The decision to retire the iOS version stems from Microsoft’s analysis of user preferences, highlighting that the majority favor video editing on desktops. Microsoft emphasized that this shift allows them to focus on enhancing features for Windows 11 and the web-based versions of Clipchamp. As a result, the iOS app will cease functioning entirely on June 6, 2026, leading also to the cancellation of a potential Clipchamp app for Android.

As stated in a support document, Microsoft noted, “We have found that most users prefer editing their video projects on our web and desktop applications. In order to deliver high-value features and improvements, we are focusing our efforts on these applications to benefit users.”

Important User Advisory

Microsoft strongly advises all current iOS users to export their projects as MP4 files and store them locally on their devices prior to June 9, 2026. This precaution is essential to avoid data loss, as the company has indicated that any unexported video projects will be deleted after the app’s retirement date. Users of Microsoft 365, who have access to the Clipchamp Premium feature, must also transition their work elsewhere, since the iOS app’s functionalities will no longer be available.

While Clipchamp for iOS may function up to the retirement date, Microsoft has made it clear that connections to the app will be disabled thereafter. Users are encouraged to explore the full capabilities of Clipchamp through the desktop version or via the online platform at clipchamp.com.

Clipchamp’s Continuation on Desktop and Web

In response to inquiries regarding Clipchamp’s future, Microsoft reassured users that both the web and desktop versions will remain fully operational and continue to receive support. The company stated, “The Clipchamp web and desktop applications will remain fully functional. There are no changes to these applications.”

Although recent updates have complicated the export process for Windows 11 users—requiring syncing to OneDrive—the app continues to evolve with the addition of new features, ensuring it remains a competitive offering in the market.
