In a recent update, Microsoft reported an impressive milestone, revealing that Windows now boasts approximately 1.6 billion monthly active users. Additionally, Bing has achieved a significant breakthrough by surpassing 1 billion monthly active users for the first time. While the Windows figures are expected, Bing’s growth trajectory is particularly noteworthy and suggests its market share is nearing 13%, as previously discussed in our analyses.
Microsoft’s Strategic Focus on User Engagement
During the company’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella emphasized a renewed emphasis on Windows, hinting at strategies aimed at enhancing user engagement across its key products, which include Edge and Bing. Nadella expressed Microsoft’s intent to return to the fundamentals of Windows in order to “win back” its dedicated user base.
The update on active Windows PCs now at 1.6 billion raises questions about its implications. While the number reflects an increase, assessing its significance requires more data. For instance, without insight into the growth rate or whether this uptick is influenced by the phase-out of Windows 10, the figures alone remain ambiguous.
Understanding the Numbers
It’s worth noting that Microsoft does not routinely disclose its Windows market share annually, leading many analysts to depend on third-party tracking services, which can vary in accuracy. For contextual comparison, back in 2018, Microsoft stated there were around 1.5 billion PCs utilizing Windows. Now, as of 2026, a slight increase to 1.6 billion aligns with the narrative Microsoft has been conveying about its operating system’s growth.
Further, Microsoft is not just boasting about user numbers; they have laid out a commitment to enhance Windows’ core functionalities, ensuring smooth operation on low-RAM systems. Among the improvements highlighted by Nadella were enhancements such as better management of Windows Updates and various performance tweaks currently in testing phases.

Moreover, Nadella mentioned that the “value of Windows will expand to deliver unmetered intelligence at the edge.” This signals an exciting transition for Microsoft, reflecting a shift in focus towards consumer-oriented strategies that could bolster all its products, including Windows, Edge, Xbox, and Bing.
Bing Achieves Record User Engagement
Regarding Bing, the surge to 1 billion monthly active users might come as a surprise to some, especially considering the common skepticism surrounding its usage. However, it appears that many users are engaging with Bing regularly, contributing to this unprecedented growth. Nadella reported that the Edge browser has consistently gained market share for 20 consecutive quarters, coinciding with Bing’s significant user milestone.
As someone who uses Bing regularly, I appreciate its unique integration of AI with web search, along with its engaging user interface and the opportunity to earn rewards through Microsoft Rewards—features that distinguish it from competitors like Google.
Additionally, Microsoft’s ecosystem is also thriving; LinkedIn has surpassed 1.3 billion members while simultaneously fostering richer interactions among users. Nadella also noted that in the domain of Microsoft 365, subscriptions have risen to nearly 95 million, showing promising signs of increased user satisfaction, particularly with the introduction of Agent Mode as the default setting.
