Microsoft Announces Windows 11 Update to Refresh Legacy User Interface While Keeping Control Panel and Other Classic Features

Microsoft is gradually phasing out many outdated features in Windows 11, including the once-essential Control Panel. While I typically rely on the Settings app, the presence of legacy elements remains evident, such as the Bluetooth file transfer tool. The tech giant has announced intentions to further modernize the operating system.

Recently, Microsoft disclosed plans for a comprehensive dark mode transformation that will span various legacy interfaces, including the Windows Run dialog and the Windows Registry Editor. However, the company has not provided a specific timeline for these updates.

In exciting developments, Marcus Ash, the head of Windows Design, revealed that Microsoft is actively developing new tools aimed at modernizing more legacy pop-ups and system UIs. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to enhancing the user experience throughout Windows 11.

While the modernization of Windows is prioritized, the incorporation of dark mode into legacy elements is deemed a secondary focus, contingent on the success of the primary modernization efforts.

“We started with extending dark mode in the Run dialog and various File Explorer surfaces to address customer requests, ” Ash expressed in a post on X.“Simultaneously, we are crafting tools to enable the modernization of other dialogs across Windows 11 that were constructed on outdated frameworks.”

Users have voiced opinions suggesting that Microsoft should prioritize modernizing these older interfaces instead of simply applying dark mode. This perspective is supported by Microsoft, and Ash has affirmed that their focus aligns with this approach.

Recent preview builds of Windows have demonstrated the progress being made, showcasing a revamped Windows Run, constructed using WinUI 3. This version will support dark mode and feature improvements, including enhanced search capabilities.

It’s important to note that this new Run dialog will not fully replace the existing legacy version, which will continue to be available and receive its own dark mode enhancement.

While further details are pending, Microsoft has indicated that these updates will begin rolling out throughout 2026, without a defined deadline for the dark mode makeover.

In the interim, enhancements such as a movable and resizable taskbar are being prioritized, with the Start menu improvements also recognized as a significant area of focus.

Moreover, Microsoft plans to gradually introduce 100% native applications for Windows 11, further committing to modernization over time.
