Unlocking the Potential of Windows 11’s ‘Resume’ Feature
Windows 11 introduces an innovative feature known as ‘Resume, ’ aimed at providing seamless app continuity between desktop and mobile platforms, particularly for Android users. According to recent insights from Windows Latest, Microsoft is poised to expand the range of applications that will support this feature, though iOS compatibility remains absent at this time.
Expanding Support for Third-Party Apps
In a recent update to its support documentation, Microsoft confirmed that more third-party apps on Android will soon be compatible with the Resume feature. For an app to benefit from Resume, it must be made available on both Windows and Android platforms.
Current Limitations and Recent Additions
Recently, Microsoft introduced support for Spotify, allowing users to pause a song on their mobile device and resume playback on their Windows 11 PC. While this functionality is promising, the implementation has been sluggish; Resume was introduced nearly a year ago, and public support remains limited primarily to OneDrive.

The Challenges of Limited Feature Support
The minimal support currently afforded to the Resume feature stems from how Microsoft integrated its API into Windows 11. Previously, only applications utilizing the ‘Link to Windows’ solution could engage with Resume, which has proven to be a hindrance due to its restrictive nature. This design has also left many developers unaware or unable to take advantage of it.
Unlocking Greater Accessibility for Developers
To improve the situation, Microsoft is broadening the accessibility of the Resume feature for Android apps by introducing an additional integration method, utilizing the built-in Windows Notification System (WNS).This alteration will allow a broader array of applications to become compatible with Resume, enhancing usability.
When queried about the process for developers to participate in the Resume feature, Microsoft clarified that access is not automatically available. Developers must formally request permission through email, providing their WNS registration, app’s Package SID, a description of the user experience, and accompanying screenshots. This stringent approach aims to ensure that Resume retains its quality and does not become overrun with subpar applications.
How to Locate & Use the ‘Resume’ Feature in Windows 11
To find the Resume feature on Windows 11, navigate to Settings > Apps. Here, you will see ‘Resume‘ listed, with OneDrive included among the supported applications, even if you do not have OneDrive installed.

By default, the Resume feature is enabled, with Windows operating a background process named CrossDeviceResume.exe.

Functionality of Resume with OneDrive
For enhanced functionality, if you access a supported OneDrive file on your Android device and subsequently unlock your PC, you will receive a notification prompting you to continue working on the document. Upon selecting the notification, Windows directs you to OneDrive’s web interface, where the document automatically opens. While this feature’s reliability may vary, successful instances showcase its potential.

Privacy Considerations Surrounding the Resume Feature
On a technical level, the Resume feature does not inherently pose a privacy risk. When using an Android app that supports Resume, the app registers an alert based on user activity, such as engaging with a video, document, or chat thread. This registration process culminates in the app communicating with its server to generate a resume prompt for the corresponding Windows PC.
Subsequently, this server sends a specific WNS notification to Windows, which interprets it as a cue to facilitate continuation on the PC. Notably, Windows does not distribute your data to developers, and only those applications you actively install will enable Resume functionality.
