Microsoft Introduces New Backup Alert in Windows 11 Start Menu

Microsoft has rolled out a noticeable change in the Windows 11 Start menu, featuring a new alert titled “Action advised – back up your PC”. This eye-catching yellow notification underscores the importance of backing up your data, highlighting the need for users to safeguard their important files and applications. The alert includes a direct option for initiating a backup.

This isn’t the first instance where Microsoft has encouraged users to utilize OneDrive for data protection; however, each effort seems more intrusive than the last. As illustrated in the accompanying screenshot, the alert appears within the Microsoft account section of the Start menu, though users have the option to dismiss it by clicking on the ‘X’.

“We want to ensure that you always have access to your files, apps, settings, and passwords by backing them up in the cloud, ” the warning reads, urging users to explore OneDrive for seamless backup solutions.

Upon clicking ‘Continue’, users are directed to the OneDrive-centric Windows Backup app. However, for those located in the European Union, additional backup options may be available. In the United States, options for third-party backup clients appear to be limited, especially when the device is set to that region.

Unfortunately, users cannot disable these notifications entirely; they will persist across the Windows 11 operating system, although dismissing them is possible.

The Broader Context of Microsoft Notifications in Windows 11

The OneDrive backup alert is just one example of the frequent prompts users encounter in Windows 11. Following the installation of the Bing Wallpaper app via the Microsoft Store, I found that Microsoft continually encouraged me to consider using additional services.

For instance, the Bing Wallpaper app often suggests modifying browser settings to favor Bing, including adjustments to the New Tab Page background. The screenshot below exemplifies how the app pushes users toward maximizing Bing’s visibility in their browsing experience.

If users opt for “Try new settings, ” they may be guided through changing their default search engine to Bing across various browsers, including Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. This change means search queries will default to Bing, rather than more commonly used alternatives.

Additionally, the app encourages users to install a Bing extension, which not only features Bing’s content on the New Tab Page but also reinforces Bing as the default search engine, enhancing the overall experience.

Choosing “Maybe later” or closing the prompt postpones any changes, thereby leaving user settings intact.

As I suggested in a previous discussion, it might be time to reconsider the usage of applications like Bing Wallpaper, advocating instead for built-in options such as Windows Spotlight that provide a more integrated and customizable experience.
