Elden Ring: Exploring the Best Ashes of War in Shadow of the Erdtree DLC

Elden Ring has evolved with the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, introducing a host of new experiences. Players are now invited to traverse the expansive Realm of Shadow, filled with diverse Legacy Dungeons, alongside fresh weapons, gear, and a variety of Ashes of War. Many of these Ashes revitalize existing weapons, creating exciting new gameplay dynamics.

The Ultimate Ashes of War Overview

This guide highlights the most exceptional Ashes of War featured in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, accompanied by an interactive map for easy tracking.

1. Divine Beast Frost Stomp

Compatible with: All melee armaments

The Divine Beast Frost Stomp enhances any melee armament by adding a Cold affinity. Upon activation, this Ash allows the Tarnished to stomp the ground, creating an impactful frost wave. It surpasses the traditional Hoarfrost Stomp in both power and Area of Effect (AoE) capabilities. Players can also charge the stomp to amplify both its damage and range, making it particularly effective against challenging foes like the Godskin Duo.

To acquire it, players must defeat the Divine Beast Dancing Lion and trade the resulting Remembrance at the Roundtable Hold.

2. Raging Beast

Compatible with: Beast Claws

Only usable with the Beast Claws, the Raging Beast Ash of War shines in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This ability enables quick dodge maneuvers while unleashing multiple slashes on enemies. In my experience, when combined with a Bleed infusion, it allows for rapid stacking of Bleed damage alongside superb mobility.

Players can obtain this Ash by defeating a Teardrop Scarab located north of the Bridge Leading to Village Site of Grace, but watch out for the surrounding wolves!

3. Ghostflame Call

Compatible with: Medium/Large swords and spears (excluding Twinblades and Backhand Blades)

The Ghostflame Call imparts versatility to a range of medium and large weapons. By summoning Ghostflame on opponents, players can initiate a light attack that ignites the ground or perform a heavy attack causing an explosion. While it may not match the strength of Ghostflame Ignition from Death’s Poker, it is a unique option for standard weapons.

This Ash can be collected by defeating the Death Rite Bird near Hidden Charo’s Grave.

4. Dryleaf Whirlwind

Compatible with: Dryleaf Arts

Exclusively for the Dryleaf Arts, the Dryleaf Whirlwind allows players to employ moves akin to Dane’s Footwork, executing powerful spinning kicks against foes. In my Dryleaf Art build, I equipped this Ash with Bleed infusion, leading to amusing combinations, including defeating a Tree Sentinel using just kicks!

Find this Ash at the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, perched on a ledge above a waterfall northeast of the East Site of Grace.

5. Aspect of the Crucible: Wings

Compatible with: Non-colossal swords and thrust-capable polearms

The Aspect of the Crucible: Wings grants players the ability to soar briefly and attack from above using spectral wings. While visually impressive, its utility in boss encounters may be limited due to the potential for interruption. Obtain this Ash by defeating Black Knight Edredd at the Fort of Reprimand, located south of Moorth Ruins.

6. Rolling Sparks

Compatible with: Perfume Bottles

Essential for Perfumer builds, the Rolling Sparks Ash allows players to cast perfume mid-range, provoking a swift explosion upon impact. I found this to be particularly effective in my Frost Perfumer build, demonstrating significant damage potential. This Ash drops from a flying Teardrop Scarab northeast of the Highroad Cross, but approach with caution through the surrounding land.

7. Blink Bolt

Compatible with: All melee weapons

The Blinkbolt Ash of War offers a thrilling method of combat with a Lightning affinity. Activating this ability renders players invisible while delivering a quick dodge, leaving behind a trail of lightning that can damage nearby enemies. It resembles a swift maneuver reminiscent of divine powers and can be found in a chest within Fog Rift Catacombs adjacent to Castle Ensis.

8. Blind Spot

Compatible with: Backhand Blades

Delivering swift and lethal strikes, Blind Spot is akin to an enhanced version of the Bloodhound’s Step. Players leap towards their target, making it nearly impossible for enemies to defend. This powerful Ash is affiliated with the Backhand Blade, which is intricately linked to the DLC’s Bleed weaponry.

It can be obtained northeast of the Scorched Ruins in Gravesite Plain, located on a corpse surrounded by foes.

9. Wing Stance

Compatible with: Light Greatswords

The Wing Stance may seem underwhelming at first glance, but it functions similarly to Unsheathe. Limited to the Milady weapon, it offers players a chance to execute powerful slashing and thrusting attacks. Achieving fluidity in combat often poses a challenge due to the nature of encounters with bosses. Located in a chest in Castle Ensis, players will access it after hopping over the balcony at the Lord’s Chamber Site of Grace.

10. The Poison Flower Blooms Twice

Compatible with: All melee weapons

This visually striking Ash of War, The Poison Flower Blooms Twice, inflicts Scarlet Rot on enemies while propelling players forward. With a successful follow-up attack, significant damage can be dealt. Drop location occurs from a Teardrop Scarab found in the ravine beneath the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, just south of the Ravine North Site of Grace.
