Celebrating with Honkai Star Rail’s Commencement Reception: As part of the HSR 4.2 anniversary festivities, players are given the chance to select a complimentary 5-star limited character. The selection consists of seven noteworthy characters that were once top-tier options during various phases of the game. However, the competitive landscape evolves, leading to some characters losing their luster in terms of viability and investment worthiness.
In this guide, we will analyze which free 5-star character is the most beneficial to choose from the Commencement Reception, detailing the potential advantages they offer to your team dynamics.
Choosing the Optimal 5-Star Character in HSR’s Commencement Reception
Among the characters available, two stand out for their exceptional value based on the composition of your existing team. Meanwhile, two others are decent but have limited applicability, and three should generally be bypassed.
Top Choices: Kafka and Sparkle
Select Kafka if you meet the following criteria:
- Your team includes Hysilens, as Kafka’s damage-over-time (DOT) capabilities work harmoniously with them.
- You’re utilizing Black Swan, whose Arcana significantly benefits from the DOT effects Kafka consistently delivers.
- You have either of the above or at least one additional high-impact DOT character, complemented by Ruan Mei or another unit that can enhance damage or manage turn order.
Opt for Sparkle if:
- Your roster features Sparxie.
- You’re deploying DPS characters that utilize Elation, such as Silver Wolf at Level 999.
Despite some limitations, Sparkle’s ability to facilitate action advances is still pertinent. Fortunately, recent updates have made her skill point buffs more advantageous, enabling her to effectively replenish energy which is critical for all Elation characters.
Examining Acheron and Aventurine
Aventurine remains a competent sustain unit, providing ongoing shields. However, the current meta trends away from single-target enemies, rendering his ultimate debuff less impactful, particularly outside select encounters like Apocalyptic Shadow. Given his low multipliers compared to newer characters, it might be prudent to consider stronger alternatives.
Acheron faces similar drawbacks. The unit’s multipliers are relatively low, compounded by her heightened dependency on team composition. To optimize her potential, she requires two Nihility characters focused on debuffing, which are not commonly found, demanding considerable investment for a character whose damage output still pales compared to recent additions.
Should you choose Jing Yuan, Jingliu, or Imbibitor Lunae?
In summary, exercise caution before selecting any of these characters. Unless you have a strong personal preference and are not concerned about high-end challenges, their utility is limited. Jingliu continues to struggle with low damage output post-rework, while Jing Yuan mirrors Acheron’s pitfalls, needing specific teammates to elevate his effectiveness. Finally, Imbibitor Lunae is often viewed as a resource drain with minimal returns.
