Should You Rescue the Hostages in The Outer Worlds 2 or Abandon Them?

As you navigate through the Golden Ridge area in The Outer Worlds 2, you’re on a quest to track down the elusive De Vries and the sinister Seer Wiley. This journey culminates in a pivotal choice: will you save the hostages, or will you abandon them to their fate? Below, we explore the implications of each decision during the “On the Trail of the Traitor”main quest.

Should You Save the Hostages in The Outer Worlds 2?

As you approach the conclusion of Golden Ridge, your pursuit leads you to a critical moment within Alexandra Monastery. Here, you’ll encounter two doors: one labelled “Betray Your Values”and the other “Be a Hero.”Through a nearby window, you catch a glimpse of the hostages bound and helpless on the floor.

Choosing the right door grants access to a puzzle room. However, while you engage with this challenge, Seer Wiley gets a chance to enact her sinister plans. Opting to go through the left door sets the stage for a more complicated scenario involving the two antagonist characters.

What Happens if You Save the Hostages?

If you successfully navigate the puzzle and align with the Seer’s manipulations, you’ll gain a commendable +3 to your Order of the Ascension reputation. However, there’s a significant trade-off: Wiley can transmit vital security codes to De Vries, allowing her to unleash Automech adversaries when you reach the Greater Tranquility Substation.

This added conflict can pose a challenge, particularly depending on your character build. For those who have invested in the Hack skill, facing robotic foes may have less impact. Plus, you’ll accrue some extra experience points along the way.

What Transpires If You Let the Hostages Die?

Opting to let the hostages meet a grim fate results in a loss of 3 points from your Order reputation. However, you may still redeem yourself up until you step into the Seer’s arena. At this juncture, De Vries expresses her dissatisfaction with the Seer’s actions, leading to Automechs attacking De Vries’ soldiers as well. This dynamic shift can create an easier battle for you at the Greater Tranquility Substation, although benefits in terms of experience may be lower.

Moreover, you have the option to solve the puzzle that rescues the hostages, yet you can subsequently choose to eliminate them via the “Activate Keypunch Cycle” decision, ultimately yielding the same consequence as abandoning them entirely.

How to Complete the Orb Puzzle in The Outer Worlds 2

Should you decide to take the moral high ground or engage in a brutal act, proceed into the puzzle room on the right. Once you ascend the stairs, you’ll enter a more expansive area inhabited by enemies. After you dispatch them, climb to the top level and investigate the room with an orb behind glass situated above some pressure plates on the floor.

Your goal is to interact with these plates in a manner that allows the orb to maintain motion. Begin by stepping on each plate in sequence while ensuring that the orb can transition freely across the barriers.

Once the orb descends at the corridor’s end, drop through the hole. You will find the orb obstructed by destructible objects marked with red targets. Eliminate these to keep the orb moving forward. Trace the red cables on the ground to a nearby lever, pulling it twice according to the orb’s position. Continue following the orb to new pressure pads and step on them similarly as before.

Ultimately, the orb will descend into a safe located opposite your entry point.Search the safe for the Auto-Pneumatic Keypunch Activation Keycard and use it on the device in front of the hostages. At this critical moment, you can choose to save or doom the hostages.
