Housemarque’s Ambitious New Project: Saros
According to Housemarque’s CEO, Ilari Kuittinen, the upcoming title, Saros, would not have come to fruition if the studio had remained independent. This statement reflects the significant impact that the acquisition by Sony has had on the development of Housemarque’s latest project.
The Influence of Sony’s Acquisition
In a recent interview with Helsingin Sanomat, Kuittinen discussed the transformative effects of the acquisition. While he noted that adapting to Sony’s human resources practices brought some cultural adjustments, the infusion of financial support has proved invaluable. This funding has enabled Housemarque to relocate to new offices and allocate necessary resources for developing Saros, which began full production in 2022. Although an official budget has not been disclosed, sources suggest it is comparable to the estimated €70 million budget of Alan Wake 2.
A First Look at Saros
Saros was unveiled during February’s PlayStation State of Play event, showcasing a cinematic trailer that hinted at its intriguing story and setting. While specific gameplay mechanics remain largely underwraps, early insights indicate that Saros will build upon the core mechanics established in Housemarque’s previous title, Returnal. Players can expect an engaging experience where the game world dynamically changes with each death, complemented by permanent progression systems designed to assist players in navigating numerous challenges.
Looking Ahead
Currently under development exclusively for PlayStation 5, Saros is anticipated to launch in 2026. As the release date approaches, fans and gamers alike eagerly await more details on what promises to be an exciting addition to Housemarque’s portfolio.
