“Rafael Nadal played terribly; Novak Djokovic can’t play tennis anymore” – When Roger Federer sarcastically discussed Andy Murray’s Wimbledon chances

During a press conference, Roger Federer once sarcastically replied to a reporter who asked about Andy Murray’s chances at Wimbledon, during a time when top players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were thought to be on the decline.

Despite being the top seed and defending champion, Federer was unexpectedly defeated 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 by Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. On the other hand, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray, who were also top seeds, managed to successfully advance to the semifinals of the prestigious grasscourt Major.

Despite his defeat, Roger Federer was asked about Andy Murray’s chances of winning his home Grand Slam, given the apparent decline in performance from players such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The Swiss retaliated by sarcastically suggesting that Nadal’s recent performances had been “terrible,”brushing off Robin Soderling as a non-threat, and casting doubt on Djokovic’s competence to compete effectively. He mockingly added that Murray had an “easy ride”to the Wimbledon title.

“Yeah, I mean, true, Rafa played terribly lately; Soderling is not a threat either. He’s got an easy ride to this victory, that’s for sure. Djokovic can’t play tennis anymore it seems like,”he said in his post-match press conference.

After becoming more serious, he encouraged the crowd to show respect towards the players and discouraged any inappropriate questions. He also praised Murray as a phenomenal player and expressed his certainty in the Brit’s ability to win at Wimbledon.

“Got to make your own work, please. Respect the players. Obviously Andy is a fantastic player and he’s got all the chances to win here. We all know that,”he added.
