NCT Leader Taeyong Completes Military Service
On December 14, 2025, Taeyong, the leader of the popular K-pop group NCT, was officially discharged from the South Korean Navy, marking a pivotal chapter in his career and the history of NCT. This event solidifies Taeyong’s status as the first member of the group to complete the country’s mandatory military service.
Service Highlights and Contributions
During his 20-month tenure, Taeyong enlisted in April 2024 and served as a cultural promotion soldier within the Navy Band and Honor Guard. His role in the publicity unit of the Gugak Honor Guard Battalion allowed him to showcase his artistic talents while fulfilling his civic obligations.
Emotional Discharge Ceremony
The discharge ceremony was an emotional affair, captured in several heartwarming videos shared across SM Entertainment and NCT’s official social media channels. Upon his release, Taeyong’s reunion with family was particularly touching; he respectfully bowed to his parents, honoring them with a public display of gratitude and love. Touching moments included receiving flowers and warm hugs from his mother, which resonated deeply within the K-pop community.
Reflections on His Service
Taeyong took to Instagram to express his feelings about returning to civilian life. He shared a series of photos along with a heartfelt caption that outlined his service duration, from April 15, 2024, to December 14, 2025. His post included emojis that reflected his naval background and marked his transition back into everyday life. The next day, he shared in an Instagram story, “I am now truly civilian Taeyong, ” describing his military experience as surreal.
Gratitude Towards Fans
In his reflections, Taeyong acknowledged the long wait that fans endured, stating, “I can’t share everything I’ve thought about over the past 20 months, but I’m pondering how to repay the love from fans that has deeply touched my heart. Thank you for waiting. I love and appreciate you, ” as reported by tenasia.
Future Plans and NCT Dynamics
Before starting his military service, Taeyong had assured fans that he would return as an improved version of himself. During his time away, he expanded his horizons as a solo artist, releasing two successful EPs, “Shalala”in 2023 and “TAP”in 2024, both achieving remarkable chart success on iTunes globally.
Taeyong’s discharge comes as NCT 127 navigates various transitions. Although he is the first to complete his service, fellow members Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Jungwoo are currently fulfilling their own military obligations, with Doyoung and Jungwoo having enlisted just recently on December 8. To celebrate his return, Taeyong has announced plans for an upcoming livestream to reconnect with his fans, as highlighted by The Korea Herald.
