Microsoft Responds to User Feedback: AI Actions Now Optional in Windows 11
Recently, Microsoft introduced AI Actions to the context menus in Windows 11, enhancing user experience with AI-driven features. However, following user feedback, the tech giant has promptly made these actions optional in the latest build, version 26220.7344, released in December.
The updated functionality allows users to streamline their context menu. As noted in the release notes, Microsoft stated,
If there are no available or enabled AI Actions, this section will no longer show in the context menu.
For those who prefer a minimalist approach, removing AI Actions is straightforward. Users can navigate to Settings > Apps > Actions and simply uncheck the options linked to applications like Paint, Photos, and Teams. This consolidation helps prevent empty AI Action slots from occupying valuable space in an already busy context menu.
The AI Actions feature itself enables quick functionalities when handling images, such as performing a Visual Search with Bing, blurring backgrounds using Photos, or removing backgrounds with Paint. While these quick actions may enhance productivity for some users, others may find them unnecessary clutter in their workflow.
Furthermore, critics have pointed out the redundant nature of the AI Actions menu, as it primarily redirects users to specific applications. This could be accomplished simply by utilizing the Open With function to directly launch the desired program and execute the necessary commands.
In contrast to the extensive options offered in Windows 11—where an image’s context menu can display up to 18 items, excluding the action row and “Show More Options”—other operating systems, such as Fedora Xfce, showcase a comparatively leaner context menu with only ten items. This discrepancy highlights Microsoft’s approach to delivering extensive choices, which may overwhelm users wanting a simpler experience.
In addition to making AI Actions optional, Microsoft is enhancing the context menu further by introducing a new manage file sub-menu that consolidates commands like Compress to… and Copy as path. The company is also grouping all OneDrive options into a single, coherent menu, enhancing organization and ease of use for users managing files across the cloud.
With these adjustments, Microsoft demonstrates its commitment to adapting based on user needs and improving the overall Windows 11 experience. As the operating system evolves, staying tuned to user feedback will continue to shape its development.
