There’s a growing emphasis on a revolutionary category of personal computers known as “Copilot+ PCs, ”and if you haven’t upgraded your device yet, you could be falling behind in the rapidly evolving landscape of computing. This assertion, originating from Microsoft’s marketing department, underscores the company’s forward-thinking vision. According to Microsoft, the latest PCs are categorized as “AI PCs, ”suggesting that those who are utilizing older hardware may be missing essential advancements.
Understanding Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft delineates “Copilot+ PCs”as a distinctive subclass of Windows PCs, stating, “All Copilot+ PCs are Windows 11 PCs, but not all Windows 11 PCs meet the Copilot+ criteria.” So, what exactly qualifies a PC as a “Copilot+ PC”? To meet this classification, devices must feature up to 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of 40+ TOPs.

Interestingly, many older AI PCs do not qualify as Copilot+ PCs because their NPUs fall short of the 40 TOPs threshold. For instance, my Spectre (2024) is disqualified since it operates with only 10 TOPs of NPU.

The Role of NPUs in AI Computing
For those unfamiliar, an NPU, or Neural Processing Unit, is specifically optimized for artificial intelligence and machine learning operations. Microsoft advocates for the advantages of NPUs, stating that PCs equipped with these units are not only more secure but also enhance on-device AI processing. This capability significantly improves users’ productivity across various tasks, although it’s worth noting that conventional gaming laptops may have sufficient GPU power to run AI models efficiently without the need for these advanced PCs.

The company emphasizes that these devices are engineered to accommodate both current and future AI innovations. They suggest that transitioning to a Copilot+ PC is pivotal for anyone looking to remain ahead in the tech curve.
However, Microsoft has not clarified how exactly these AI advancements will prepare users for the next phase of computing, particularly in light of the increasing prices of RAM and GPUs, attributed to AI demand.

If you’re skeptical about the value of Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft asserts that these devices “accelerate productivity and creativity” with features such as the Image Creator in MS Paint. Here are some notable functionalities:
