Microsoft is enhancing its integration of AI features within Notepad, a function that has been available for several months but is now receiving significant updates. The latest enhancement introduces AI text “streaming, ” allowing users to observe the text being generated in real-time as the AI types it out, rather than simply displaying the final output.
Understanding AI Text Streaming
In the context of AI, especially with large language models like ChatGPT, “streaming”refers to the immediate display of text as it is being processed. Users often experience this fluid and dynamic output with advanced AI models outside of Notepad. Microsoft is setting out to replicate this engaging experience in Notepad, aiming for it to function more closely to ChatGPT, which is a significant shift for the traditional text editor.

This AI streaming feature is currently being rolled out but is initially available only for Copilot+ PCs. However, good news for users: Microsoft has indicated that the AI text streaming option will eventually be accessible on standard PCs, including those with AMD and Intel processors that may not officially support Windows 11 but are capable of running it.
As noted in a recent post from Microsoft, “Streaming support for Rewrite is limited to results generated locally on Copilot+ PCs at this time.”
Is AI Taking Away from Notepad’s Simplicity?
While the introduction of AI in Notepad may seem appealing, it raises questions about the core purpose of a basic text editor. Notepad has traditionally served as a simple tool for quick text entry, and the integration of AI features, although optional, feels out of place for many users.

For those seeking to create AI-generated content, alternative tools like the dedicated Copilot app or Microsoft 365 Copilot are more suitable. Additionally, robust AI applications such as Claude and desktop versions of ChatGPT offer effective solutions for content generation.
Despite the legitimate use cases where AI can enhance productivity, the reality is that Notepad was never intended to be a platform for comprehensive text generation, rewriting, or summarizing tasks.

With AI functionality activated by default in Notepad, users can select text and utilize features such as Write, Rewrite, and Summarize, along with a customizable re-write option that allows modifications in tone (ranging from Formal to Humorous) and length. Notepad users can even change formats directly to suit specific tasks, creating content such as marketing materials from within the application.

Disabling AI Features in Notepad
Despite the extended functionalities, some users may find Notepad becoming increasingly cumbersome. It is still a fast application, but the introduction of AI elements could make it feel bloated. Fortunately, users who prefer the classic Notepad experience can easily disable AI features by navigating to Settings > Copilot.

However, it’s important to note that disabling the feature does not erase the Copilot components from the application’s code; they remain embedded within the program but are not active.
What are your thoughts on the incorporation of AI in traditional applications like Notepad?
