Microsoft Releases Fix for Windows 10 Apps Issues
Not only is Windows 11 version 24H2 experiencing a new known issue resulting in Task Manager displaying incorrect counts of running apps and processes, but Windows 10 version 22H2 is also facing a bug following the latest updates, which is notably more severe.
Microsoft has recognized that after the installation of KB5043131, one of the recent non-security updates for Windows 10 (released in September), users may encounter difficulties when attempting to launch applications from non-administrator accounts. Applications affected by this issue include Quick Assist, Microsoft Teams, Windows Narrator, and potentially others. Specifically, any software configured with UIAccess set to “true”will fail to launch if initiated from a non-admin profile.
Following the September 2024 preview update (KB5043131), released on or after September 24, 2024, you may notice that applications like Quick Assist, Microsoft Teams, and Windows Narrator fail to initiate for non-admin users. This issue extends to all applications that utilize the UIAccess=true setting when executed by users without admin privileges. The UIAccess=true attribute in an app’s manifest requests elevated privileges for the application, allowing it to run from secure directories that include:
- %ProgramFiles% (and all subdirectories)
- %ProgramFiles(x86)% (and all subdirectories for 64-bit Windows)
- %systemroot%\system32
- %systemroot%\syswow64 (for 64-bit Windows)
This bug is present in client versions of Windows 10 version 22H2. To alleviate the issue, Microsoft has deployed the convenient Known Issue Rollback feature, which can automatically reverse problematic update components without any user intervention. However, it’s important to note that this workaround may take up to 24 hours to take effect, so if certain applications are unresponsive, restarting your system is advisable.
For managed devices, IT administrators must implement a specific policy to revert the issues triggered by recent updates. The policy can be downloaded from this link. A more permanent resolution is anticipated in a forthcoming update.
