Microsoft Integrates AI Agents as a Key Feature in Windows

Microsoft Advances AI Integration with MCP Support in Windows

At Build 2025, Microsoft made a significant announcement regarding the upcoming addition of native support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in Windows. Fast forward to today at Ignite 2025, the tech giant has officially launched the public preview of this vital functionality. This feature enables AI agents to seamlessly connect with various applications and tools, performing tasks on behalf of users.

Introduction of Windows On-Device Registry (ODR)

In conjunction with the MCP support, Microsoft unveiled the public preview of the Windows On-Device Registry (ODR).This system serves as a manageable repository for agent connectors, functioning essentially as MCP servers. Microsoft is including a selection of built-in agent connectors, while also allowing for the integration of third-party local and remote connectors. With registration in the On-Device Registry, these connectors facilitate enhanced agent capabilities for accomplishing a variety of tasks automatically.

New Built-In Agent Connectors

Among the various innovations announced, two built-in agent connectors for File Explorer and System Settings were introduced in public preview:

  • File Explorer Connector: This connector grants agents secure access to local files on users’ systems, enabling them to perform numerous file operations efficiently, always with user approval. The capabilities include searching, reading, writing, and editing files. Notably, agents can utilize natural language queries for file searches, allowing them to locate files based on descriptions, content, and metadata. For images, enhanced classification-based search functionality is also included.

Introduction of the Agent Workspace

Additionally, Microsoft has rolled out a private preview of the Agent Workspace—a controlled, isolated environment where AI agents can interact with other applications on Windows. This workspace is designed to remain separate from the user’s primary session, providing a policy-controlled and auditable space for agent activities. According to Microsoft, any interactions that utilize MCP and engage with computer-using agents will occur within this Agent Workspace, enabling IT teams within organizations to clearly differentiate between actions performed by agents and those of users.
