Microsoft Enhances User Interaction with New “Hey, Copilot” Wake Phrase
Last month marked a significant development for Windows users as Microsoft unveiled its new wake phrase, “Hey, Copilot, ”designed to activate the Copilot experience seamlessly. This innovation evokes memories of the earlier “Hey, Cortana”feature, introduced in 2015, but time will tell how well this new implementation will perform in practical use.
Transforming Voice Interaction with Semantic Goodbye
According to an update on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, the voice activation capability already associated with Microsoft 365 Copilot is set to become even more user-friendly. Alongside the “Hey, Copilot” command, Microsoft is developing a “semantic goodbye word.” In practical terms, this means users can not only engage with Copilot through the wake word but also easily disengage by saying something like “Bye, Copilot.” This enhancement aims to create a completely hands-free interaction experience.

Now users can close a voice session on Windows by simply saying bye or goodbye when they want to close voice session. This, paired with “Hey Copilot”wake word, provides them with complete hands-free experience for voice in Microsoft 365 Copilot on Windows devices.
Broad Availability of the Update
It’s crucial to clarify that this user experience (UX) enhancement is part of the Copilot app accessible to all Windows PCs. This update does not apply solely to the integrated Copilot available on Copilot+ devices. Instead, it will be accessible to all users running Windows 11, as well as those who continue to use Windows 10. This broadens the scope of the UX improvement, making it available to a significantly larger audience.
Anticipated Release Timelines
Interestingly, while a preview of this feature appeared to be scheduled for November 2025, Microsoft has not publicly confirmed this timeline outside the Microsoft 365 Roadmap listing. However, general availability for users is slated for next month. Keep in mind that these timelines are subject to change due to various factors, so it’s advisable to stay updated through official channels.
