Microsoft Targets Google Chrome with Copilot Integration

Currently, Google Chrome reigns supreme as the most popular web browser worldwide. In its quest to capture users, Microsoft has previously employed controversial strategies. Despite these tactics, it continues to struggle against Chrome and regulatory scrutiny. However, Microsoft seems to be shifting its approach, opting to take its Microsoft 365 Copilot offerings beyond its Edge browser to the vast user base of Chrome.

Upcoming Microsoft 365 Copilot Extension for Chrome

Recent updates to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap reveal exciting developments, including a dedicated extension for Chrome that integrates Microsoft 365 Copilot features. This new addition will enable users to access Copilot Search and Copilot Chat seamlessly within Chrome, enhancing their workflow with powerful capabilities like webpage summarization and contextual searches based on Microsoft 365 data.

“The Microsoft 365 Copilot browser extension for Chrome brings Copilot Chat and Search directly into the browser, enabling users to ask questions, summarize webpages, and search enterprise content without switching tabs. This improves productivity, reduces context switching, and provides secure, compliant in-browser AI assistance for Microsoft 365 users.”

Enterprise Focus with Potential Consumer Expansion

While the initial release will focus primarily on enterprise applications, the potential for a consumer version of the AI assistant to emerge for Chrome is plausible. As of now, users will have to wait for the rollout, which is projected to commence in February 2026, to fully experience these new functionalities.

Microsoft’s Positioning of Edge

It’s important to note that Microsoft has already woven Copilot into its Edge browser, which the company proudly branded as the “world’s first secure AI browser for businesses”at the Ignite 2025 conference. During this event, Microsoft subtly criticized its rivals by highlighting that certain competitors might compromise on security in the pursuit of enhanced productivity.
