Microsoft Bing’s Aggressive Promotion of Copilot During ChatGPT and Gemini Searches is Cringe-Worthy

Bing is strategically steering Windows 11 users away from ChatGPT and Gemini by prominently featuring an interactive Copilot widget. This new addition is significantly larger—about five times the size—than conventional search results or ads on its platform, as reported by Windows Latest.

With approximately 15% market share in the United States, Microsoft has historically leveraged Bing.com to promote its Edge browser. This approach has extended beyond just browser promotion; the latest observations indicate that Bing is now focusing its advertising efforts on AI tools and competing search platforms.

The accompanying screenshot illustrates various available actions under the Copilot feature, including “Create an image, ” “Improve writing, ” “Write a first draft, ” and “Draft an email.” These functionalities are highlighted to attract users searching for ChatGPT to stay within the Microsoft ecosystem, rather than moving on to competing services.

During my search for “ChatGPT”on Bing, my intention was to navigate directly to OpenAI’s website—a key function of any search engine. Instead of directing me there, Bing prominently displayed a Microsoft-sponsored Copilot box, which raises concerns about potential violations of antitrust regulations.

This isn’t Bing’s initial attempt to divert users away from ChatGPT and Gemini. As early as June 2025, Windows Latest noted similar advertising strategies aimed at rival AI systems. The most recent ad variant showcases aggressive features, touting direct prompt suggestions available exclusively on Bing.

Bing’s Tactics: Imitating Google and Promoting Edge

Further illustrating its efforts to capture market share, when users search for Google on Bing, the results feature a search bar that closely resembles Google’s interface. This clever tactic helps misguide users into believing they are still engaging with Google while ultimately directing them to Bing’s services.

Many consumers associate Google with online search entirely, which explains why users might still opt for Bing when they search for Google. As a result, Microsoft has designed ads that replicate Google’s appearance to ensure a seamless transition to Bing.

While many of these strategies seem to tread on slippery legal ground regarding U. S.antitrust laws, it is worth noting that Google is not without its own controversies.

Moreover, when users search for Chrome, Bing displays a comprehensive comparison ad that promotes Microsoft Edge. This ad highlights Edge’s perceived advantages over Chrome.
