How to Effectively Block Ads in Google Search AI Mode When Ad Blockers Fail

For those who have enjoyed an ad-free experience while using Google Search’s AI Mode recently, that phase has now come to an end. Users are beginning to notice the introduction of ads within this mode, and, to add to the frustration, many popular ad blockers are unable to suppress these advertisements. This article will delve into the specifics of these new ads in Google Search AI Mode and offer strategies to effectively block them.

Understanding Ads in Google Search AI Mode

Upon activating the conversational AI Mode in Google Search, users may observe that ads are now displayed at the bottom of their interactions. Google appears to be selective regarding which keywords and user profiles trigger ad displays; extensive testing across various keywords and locations yielded limited results, predominantly showing ads only in the United States.

According to user reports and our observations, all ads featured in this mode are positioned at the bottom of the conversation thread. These ads are labeled with the word “Sponsored” and are accompanied by AI-generated titles that recommend related products or services. Notably, many ad blockers, particularly those compliant with Manifest V3 standards, have reportedly failed to block these ads.

Google deploys these advertisements using the same-origin API calls mechanism employed for its other services, leading to ineffectiveness of traditional filter-based ad blockers. Our analysis of network requests during AI Mode interactions confirmed that all requests occur within Google’s framework. Unfortunately, common element-hiding tactics also seem to be ineffective at this time.

To successfully mitigate the appearance of ads in Google Search AI Mode, users will need either specialized ad blockers specifically designed for this mode or the option to manually filter ad elements themselves. Below, we’ve compiled two practical methods for efficiently blocking ads in AI Mode:

Block Ads in AI Mode with the Bye Bye, Google AI Extension

A straightforward solution for blocking ads involves downloading a Chrome extension that automates the hiding of sponsored segments in AI Mode. While advertisements may still load, this method prevents their visibility. We recommend the Bye Bye, Google AI extension, which is primarily designed to obscure AI Mode overviews but also includes a specialized option to conceal ads.

After installing the extension, access its settings and check the box labeled Hide Sponsored Links, then click the Save button. Once you reload the AI Mode conversation, ads should be eliminated from view, although you might encounter some white space in their place.

Please note that the extension relies on Google maintaining a consistent CSS structure; any updates by Google could temporarily disrupt the extension’s functionality until it is patched by the developer. Additionally, effectiveness on non-Chrome Chromium-based browsers may be limited.

Utilizing uBlock Origin’s Element Picker Mode

If you prefer a more hands-on approach, uBlock Origin’s element picker mode offers comprehensive control over ad blocking. While uBlock Origin may not consistently deactivate ads in AI Mode, you can manually select which ads to block. It’s essential to use the original uBlock Origin extension, as the Lite version supported by Chrome and various Chromium browsers lacks this feature.

You can download the original uBlock Origin extension either for Firefox or install it in Chrome with a workaround. When an ad appears in Google Search AI Mode, click on the uBlock extension button and activate the element picker option.

Position your cursor over the ad until it highlights in pink. Ensure that you select the full ad, including the “Sponsored”label. You can optimize your selection by adjusting the left slider on the CSS preview. Once satisfied, press Create to establish your filter.

Creating Element Filter in uBlock Origin FireFox

With the new filter in place, uBlock Origin will automatically eliminate all sponsored content appearing in AI Mode. As long as Google maintains its current page CSS, this filter should remain effective. If it ceases to work, you can create a new filter using the same procedure. You also have the option to delete this filter in the uBlock dashboard under the My filters section.

Given Google’s ongoing changes to page CSS, regularly updating and manually adjusting your filters is the most reliable method for blocking ads in Google Search AI Mode.
