MediaTek has recently unveiled its new Dimensity 9400+ SoC, prompting immediate comparisons with Qualcomm’s leading chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Testing this latest chip installed in the Vivo x200s, Genshin Impact was one of the key benchmarks utilized to evaluate performance. The results indicate that the Dimensity 9400+ is competitive, achieving framerates comparable to those of the Snapdragon 8 Elite. However, a closer examination reveals several factors that may ultimately favor Qualcomm in this head-to-head comparison.

Performance Insights: Genshin Impact Framerates

When running Genshin Impact, devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, specifically the Xiaomi 15 Pro, exhibited a significantly enhanced gaming experience. The Snapdragon 8 Elite managed to deliver a remarkable 53% higher framerate during the ‘1% lows’ metric compared to the Dimensity 9400+.While the Dimensity 9400+ achieved an average of 59.9 FPS with a power consumption of 4.6W, the Snapdragon 8 Elite operated at a comparable framerate but with slightly higher consumption at 4.9W, as highlighted in benchmark results from @faridofanani96 and Geekerwan.

Despite the Dimensity 9400+ showcasing impressive metrics, the ‘1% lows’ were significantly lower at just 31.5 FPS compared to 48.2 FPS on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This substantial difference translates into a noticeably smoother and more enjoyable gaming experience on the Xiaomi 15 Pro, raising questions about the performance stability of the Vivo x200s equipped with the Dimensity 9400+.

One possible explanation for the Dimensity 9400+’s performance issues is thermal throttling, which can hinder devices from maintaining playable framerates during resource-intensive tasks like gaming. This phenomenon may stem from insufficient cooling solutions in the Vivo x200s, which can significantly affect gaming performance. Both chipsets are produced using TSMC’s advanced second-generation 3nm process, yet MediaTek’s designs based on ARM architecture might not match the efficiency of Qualcomm’s proprietary Oryon cores.

Additionally, it’s essential to consider that the Xiaomi 15 Pro is rendering Genshin Impact at a higher resolution, adding more pressure on the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
