Sadly, it has been reported that David Breashears, a well-known American mountaineer and filmmaker, passed away on Thursday (March 14) at his residence in Marblehead, Massachusetts. This information was shared by his business manager in a statement.
Breashears, who was 68 years old, successfully climbed Mount Everest five times, including a 1996 expedition in which he carried an IMAX camera.
The movie “Everest”featured footage from his journey to the peak, which helped him gain widespread recognition and become a household name.
According to his website, Breashears was responsible for the first broadcasted photos from the peak of Everest in 1983. Additionally, he achieved the distinction of becoming the first American citizen to summit the mountain twice in 1985.

Ed Viesturs, Kathy Harvard, and Jed Williamson, all lifelong individuals deeply involved in the American climbing community and close to Breashears and his family, confirmed the news. They received a message from Breashears’ family outside, confirming his passing.
David Breashears, a renowned climber, was found unconscious at his home, causing shock and sadness among the climbing community when news of his unexpected death was announced on Thursday.
Reports state that he passed away due to natural causes while at his residence in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
WCVB-TV was given a statement by his family:
“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the news of David Breashears’ untimely passing.
“David was a beloved brother, uncle, father, friend and colleague and a caring, impassioned advocate of adventure, exploration, and the health of our planet.”
His family spoke about his passion for mountains and climbing them.
“He combined his passion for climbing and photography to become one of the world’s most admired adventure filmmakers.”
In 2007, Breashears founded GlacierWorks and described it as a nonprofit organization on Facebook, according to his family.
“highlights changes to Himalayan glaciers through art, science, and adventure.
“With GlacierWorks, he used his climbing and photography experience to create unique records revealing the dramatic effects of climate change on the historic mountain range.”
Additionally, the family expressed gratitude to fans for the love and prayers they have been sending to those close to Breashears.
“We want to thank everyone for their wonderful messages of support and love for David and understand that we respectfully ask for privacy as we grieve our loss.”
In 1983, Breashears accomplished a pioneering achievement by transmitting live photos from Everest’s summit.
In 1985, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first American to summit Everest twice. However, while filming a documentary on May 10, 1996, tragedy struck.
A blizzard was raging, resulting in the tragic deaths of eight climbers while Breashears’ crew documented the events.
