The Burning Sun scandal significantly impacted South Korea’s entertainment sector, marking a turbulent period in 2019. This controversy resulted not only in the judicial condemnation of several K-pop idols but also led to the ousting of other high-profile individuals from their respective groups.

The turmoil began when a series of allegations surfaced surrounding the Burning Sun nightclub in Seoul, co-owned by Seungri, a former member of the popular group BigBang. Initial charges included assault and corruption, but they soon escalated into serious claims involving prostitution, drug use, and police collusion. Ultimately, multiple celebrities were implicated in filming and distributing sex tapes without the victims’ consent.

Where Are They Now?

Seungri

However, reports have emerged indicating a resurgence of his interest in the nightlife industry with plans to open a nightclub.

Jung Joon-young

Jung Joon-young was found guilty of secretly filming and sharing intimate videos without consent, originally receiving a six-year sentence that was later reduced to five years following expressions of remorse. He was released in March 2024 and was recently spotted in France, where he has voiced aspirations of opening a Korean restaurant. His efforts to re-enter the music scene have been met with skepticism, as many believe he has not genuinely changed.

Choi Jong-hoon

Choi Jong-hoon of F. T.Island was convicted of gang rape and initially sentenced to two years and six months, though his punishment was later alleviated, leading to his release in November 2021. In 2024, he made headlines with plans to return to the entertainment industry.

Yong Jun-hyung

Another figure, Yong Jun-hyung from Highlight, acknowledged watching illegal footage shared by Jung Joon-young. He argued that while the video itself wasn’t illegal, its non-consensual distribution was problematic. After parting ways with Highlight in 2019, he has made a comeback in the music arena, releasing music in 2022, and recently married fellow K-pop artist HyunA.

Lee Jong-hyun
