Locating the Sunless Cliffs in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Sunless Cliffs Entrance

The Sunless Cliffs is a somewhat hidden area accessible in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. To find it, look for a colorful portal situated southeast of Sirene Island, near the Gestral Beach location. The portal is perched on a cliff, requiring special navigation skills to access.

Accessing the Sunless Cliffs requires the use of Esquie’s flying ability, which you can acquire after progressing to the latter part of the main storyline (specifically, at the end of Act 2).Given that the portal is located on a high ledge surrounded by water, swimming is not a viable option here.

Additionally, the challenges within the Sunless Cliffs are designed for advanced players. So, don’t feel pressured to rush in without adequate preparation.

Strategies for Completing Sunless Cliffs

Sunless Cliffs Start

Upon entering the Sunless Cliffs, you’ll find the area to be relatively compact. The path leads to an ominous monolith, with a looming eclipse overhead. As you progress, you’ll reach a juncture where the path splits left and right. It’s important to note that going left leads to a dead end, so proceed right into the tunnel.

Upon emerging from the tunnel, you will encounter a large portal structure along with an Expedition Flag nearby. This setup represents the core encounter within the Sunless Cliffs. It’s crucial to have your character builds polished and ready for the challenging battle that awaits behind this portal. It is advisable to engage in this challenge only if your party’s levels are at least Level 80 or ideally maxed out, equipped with upgraded weapons and supportive Pictos to enhance your characters’ abilities.

After interacting with the portal, you will find that only one party member can enter at a time, which mirrors previous encounters with the Gestral Merchants.

Encountering the Sunless Cliffs Mime

Sunless Cliffs Mime Portal

The challenge that awaits within is one of the game’s notorious Mime encounters, which is recognized as the most challenging in the entire game, particularly due to its menacing red eyes.

Players who are under-leveled or lack sufficient gear may find this Mime capable of delivering a one-hit KO. Hence, dodging its powerful attacks becomes a critical strategy while ensuring your strikes deal ample damage to quickly deplete its ‘Break’ gauge.

Upon defeating the Mime, players will receive Pictos for the first victory, as well as a unique ‘Bald’ haircut for the character used in the match.

Pictos Equipment

To unlock the Bald haircut for all characters in your party, each individual must win their own battle against the Mime, requiring five total fights to secure the hairstyle for every character. Players can re-attempt the Mime if they lose, but once a character triumphs, they cannot engage again. The portal will disappear once all five have succeeded, concluding the encounter within the Sunless Cliffs.

Defeating the Sunless Cliffs Mime

The battle against this Mime begins with it erecting a formidable “wall”that significantly increases its defense. This is followed by two primary attacks:

Action Sunless Cliffs Mime Attacks
Hand-to-hand combo Consists of 3 hits: the Mime will strike with one hand, followed by the other, and then execute a delayed headbutt.
Strange combo Involves 4 hits: begins with a hammer strike, the first two hits are quick, followed by two strikes with minimal delay.

To bypass its wall protection, you need to successfully Break the Mime. This makes it possible to deal normal damage while taking advantage of its vulnerability for your most powerful attacks.

Since the encounter is one-on-one, it’s advantageous to equip characters with solo buff Lumina, and include Skills that facilitate breaking the Mime’s defenses.
