China Sees $87 Price Drop for 16 GB SO-DIMM DDR5 Module, Yet Prices Remain Almost 5 Times Higher Than Last Year
The current DRAM market is characterized by significant price fluctuations. This variability leads to instances where RAM prices fluctuate daily. In March, the German market revealed a hint of this trend, notably recording its first price decrease in various DDR5 module categories.
However, this downward trend proved short-lived, as prices surged again just weeks later in April. While a few DDR5 kits experienced price reductions, others saw increases, with the overall average price of DDR5 kits remaining consistently elevated—over four times higher than pre-RAMpocalypse levels. This trend reflects a broader scenario across many regions, where pricing for various DDR5 RAM kits is consistently 4-5 times greater than normal.
According to information from @realVictor_M, the price for 16 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM RAM kits in China has seen a noteworthy drop this year, marking a significant shift in the market. Despite being considerably above its usual price observed in June 2025, the cost has fallen by an impressive 34% compared to February 2026. While it remains uncertain whether this reduction applies to all 16 GB SO-DIMM DDR5 kits or a specific model, the decrease—bringing the price down from 1, 759 Yuan or US$257 to 1, 159 Yuan or US$169—is a positive development for consumers seeking more affordable options.
This same kit was sold for just 246 Yuan or US$36 last year, revealing that even at this reduced price, it is nearly 5 times higher. The reasons behind this pricing drop remain unclear, and the future trajectory of RAM prices is still speculative. Will this trend signify a longer-term decline, or is it merely a temporary fluctuation? The market’s stabilization could take time, particularly as major DRAM manufacturers are presently focusing on meeting the needs of the burgeoning AI data center sector.
