Microsoft Introduces Update Orchestration Platform (UOP) to Streamline Windows 11 App Updates

Microsoft is set to enhance the Windows 11 experience with the launch of the Update Orchestration Platform (UOP). This innovative API will allow the operating system to automatically identify, download, and even install updates for applications based on user behavior. Notably, this functionality extends beyond the Microsoft Store, accommodating a wide range of apps, including those from external developers, thus potentially reducing the frustrations often associated with app updating on Windows 11.

Current Update Management Practices

Historically, Windows users have managed app updates primarily through the Microsoft Store and the command line tool winget. In addition to these methods, some applications come with their own built-in update mechanisms. While the Microsoft Store effectively oversees updates for applications available there, a significant number of applications operate outside of it and offer their own update processes.

Addressing Update Complexity

As Microsoft suggests, the current state of update management on Windows 11 is convoluted. Users are presented with various update mechanisms: Windows Update for crucial security updates, the Microsoft Store for applications, plus any number of proprietary update systems from developers. This hodgepodge can lead to confusion and a fragmented user experience.

The Role of the Update Orchestration Platform

The UOP aims to consolidate this chaos. By allowing developers to integrate their applications with the UOP API, both native apps and third-party software can coordinate their updates through a single Windows-side framework. This integration is particularly beneficial for third-party drivers that are not distributed via Windows Update, as they can also utilize the UOP API for more cohesive management.

Current Testing Phase and Features

Although details regarding driver updates are pending, the UOP API is currently under testing for various application updates. In recent trials conducted by Windows Latest, a new “App updates” section was discovered within the Settings menu under Apps. This feature will serve as a centralized portal for users to manage all apps that leverage the UOP API, ensuring that updates—regardless of their origin—can be downloaded or installed automatically by Windows.

Optional Feature for Developers

It is important to note that participation in the UOP is optional for developers. To leverage this new feature, they must register their applications as “update providers” with the orchestrator, providing Windows with the necessary path to their update scanning executables. Windows will then periodically run these scanners to assess the need for updates. When an update is detected, the API will facilitate communication with Windows, enabling a streamlined installation process.

Maintaining Existing Processes

While Windows will take over the timing and management of updates, it will not usurp the original installation logic and systems of third-party apps that utilize custom Win32 installers. Instead, the platform aims to enhance coordination and timing, presenting a single interface for users to track all their update needs.
