BABYMONSTER Under Pressure as YG Entertainment Aims for BLACKPINK Successor
As BABYMONSTER approaches its second anniversary, it finds itself at the center of increasing scrutiny from both the public and within YG Entertainment. The agency is keen on positioning this rookie girl group as the next global sensation following BLACKPINK’s monumental success.
Despite debuting amid high expectations as YG’s first new girl group since 2016, BABYMONSTER has not yet solidified its status as the flagship act of the agency. Their journey thus far has been marked by challenges and comparisons to the iconic BLACKPINK.
Their pre-debut single, “Batter Up, ”released in November 2023, did not garner the anticipated acclaim. It faced criticism for its outdated concept and was notably released without member Ahyeon, who was dealing with health issues, as reported by the Korea Times.
BABYMONSTER’s official debut as a full seven-member unit with their mini album “BABYMONS7ER”in 2024 marked a new beginning; however, analysts suggest the group continues to grapple with establishing a distinct identity in a competitive fifth-generation girl group landscape.
Future Plans Under YG’s Vision
YG Entertainment’s founder, Yang Hyun-suk, has expressed his vision for BABYMONSTER, referring to them as the agency’s next-generation cornerstone. He has outlined an ambitious roadmap that includes rapid promotional activities and a new digital single titled “Stuck In The Middle.”Yang has emphasized that their unique vocal talents will reflect a refreshed version of the YG sound.
Yang’s approach suggests a nurturing philosophy, likening his management style to that of a protective father, which he believes will guide the members through their growth. He stated his commitment to investing significantly in their training and upcoming releases, as highlighted by Pinkvilla.
Challenges and Competition
Despite YG’s ambitions, recent initiatives, such as the “2026 YG Special Audition: Go! Debut, ”aimed at scouting fresh talent to join the ranks of BIGBANG and BLACKPINK, have raised doubts among fans about BABYMONSTER’s standing as a true successor. This contains the potential for internal rivalry as the company searches for its next flagship act.
With BLACKPINK now engaged with YG for only full-group activities, the label is under increasing pressure to establish a strong successor, which complicates BABYMONSTER’s positioning as they were initially marketed as “the second BLACKPINK.”However, analysts remain optimistic about the group’s inherent potential, thanks to their impressive vocals, visuals, and increasing international interest, bolstered by the announcement of fan events slated for major Asian cities.
Industry insiders believe that with consistent and strategically timed releases, along with the development of a clearer artistic concept, BABYMONSTER could evolve into a significant asset for YG Entertainment, avoiding the label of being merely a transitional entity in the post-BLACKPINK era, according to the Korea JoongAng Daily.
