Apple’s upcoming updates, iOS 27 and macOS 27, are set to play a pivotal role in the company’s strategy to strengthen its foothold in the edge AI domain. This initiative includes the introduction of a new, powerful, Gemini-backed chatbot-style version of Siri, which is designed to elevate user interaction.
However, the tech giant’s aspirations extend far beyond a mere chatbot. Recent insights suggest that Apple is working diligently to secure a formidable edge in the realm of AI-enhanced photo-editing features, setting the stage for significant advancements in its software capabilities.
Harnessing AI for Advanced Photo Editing: iOS 27 and macOS 27
NEW: Apple plans AI overhaul for photo editing in iOS 27 and macOS 27, looking to better compete with Android. New features include using Apple Intelligence on-device models to extend, enhance and reframe photos. Details here – https://t.co/0kgpORfg6d

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the forthcoming iOS 27 and macOS 27 updates will introduce a new section in the Photos app specifically dedicated to “Apple Intelligence Tools.”This feature will encompass three innovative functionalities aimed at enhancing user experience.
- Extend: This tool utilizes on-device AI algorithms to generate additional contextual details around a photo. For example, users can enhance a close-up image of a landmark by adding background scenery, which can be adjusted by dragging the photo’s edges for better framing.
- Enhance: As the name implies, this feature automatically optimizes an image’s quality, brightness, and colors, delivering a polished appearance with minimal user effort.
- Reframe: Users will be able to adjust perspectives in spatial photos, which capture depth information, creating a dynamic 3D effect.
Nonetheless, Gurman warns that the implementation of these features, particularly the Extend and Reframe tools, has encountered obstacles, indicating that delays may occur if the development process does not resolve existing challenges.
The Innovative Chatbot Version of Siri
In addition to the photo-editing enhancements, Apple is focusing on a significant redesign of its Siri assistant. The new Siri will operate on Google’s TPUs and cloud architecture, although it is fully controlled by Apple, ensuring compliance with their stringent privacy guidelines.
Recent reports indicate that the revitalized Siri will be embedded in Apple’s software suite, capable of utilizing personal data, performing in-app tasks, conducting web searches, generating content—including images—offering programming assistance, and summarizing information.
One key feature on the horizon is the ability for Siri to view open application windows and on-screen content, potentially streamlining user commands. This will facilitate complex requests that involve multiple actions executed simultaneously.
The transformed Siri is expected to leverage an advanced iteration of Google’s Gemini technology, internally referred to as Apple Foundation Models version 11, which is anticipated to rival Gemini 3 and provide enhanced capabilities.
Additionally, accessibility to Siri will evolve beyond voice activation. A dedicated Siri app with iOS 27 will serve as a central hub for all past interactions with the AI, including an “Extensions”feature that integrates third-party agents like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Users will find a specific “Extensions”section in the App Store to install these helpful tools.
While voice command and power button activation will remain options, Apple is also experimenting with a new interface situated within the Dynamic Island. Moreover, the existing Spotlight search function is being replaced by a unified Siri interface that presents “Siri Suggestions”across applications, scheduled appointments, and AI-driven setting modifications.
