Xiaomi Might Reserve the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro Exclusively for Its Premium ‘Ultra’ Variant
Although the precise price for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro remains unconfirmed, industry leaks suggest that the majority of Android flagships will feature the standard version, with the ‘Pro’ variant reserved for models positioned at the ultra-premium tier due to its steep price. The anticipated cost for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is around $280, providing a benchmark for what’s expected from flagship system-on-chips (SoCs) launching later this year.
According to insights from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Xiaomi’s new models—including the base model, Pro, and Pro Max—are set to debut in September, and it seems that none will utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. However, it’s important to note that the Xiaomi 18 Ultra is expected to be part of this lineup, and given its superior specifications, it’s likely this model will exclusively feature the much-coveted Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
Furthermore, Qualcomm has hinted at allowing its partners some flexibility in specifications. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro can potentially use older LPDDR5X RAM instead of the newer LPDDR6. However, the rising costs of wafer production and memory could deter Xiaomi from adopting the latest silicon, even if manufacturers have the option to enhance compatibility.
The competitive landscape of the smartphone sector is unforgiving, and despite Xiaomi’s status as a prominent manufacturer, it is not insulated from the global component shortages that threaten to compress profit margins.
