In Xenoblade Chronicles X, building affinity with your party members is not only crucial for enhancing gameplay but also an essential strategy for unlocking rich narrative experiences. Engaging in battles together or selecting the right dialogue choices contributes to strengthening your bonds, enabling new heart-to-heart interactions and unlocking exciting Affinity Missions throughout New Los Angeles (NLA).
As you progress to heart-to-heart level 2, the game introduces a unique requirement: obtaining a pet to access certain interactions. Unfortunately, guidance on acquiring your pet isn’t readily available. This comprehensive guide will walk you through finding a pet in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, helping you solidify your relationships within the game.
Accept the Nine Lives Affinity Mission

To kickstart your journey to pet ownership, you must first complete the Nine Lives Affinity Mission. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Complete Chapter 5
- Reach level 20
Having conquered the challenging Chapter 5, it’s likely that you are already at the required level. To begin the mission, head north of the Commercial District. You can use the fast travel system or ask a Transport Pilot for assistance if needed.
Once there, speak to Matthias, a BLADE Mediator, who will inform you that Aisha, one of NLA’s beloved cats, has gone missing and enlist your help in gathering clues about her whereabouts.
How to Complete Nine Lives

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition offers numerous markers to assist players. After accepting the mission, enable tracking, then press L + Y
to access your map and identify your next destination.
Aisha was last spotted in the Lower Administrative District. If you have unlocked fast travel to the Hangar, proceed there. If not, navigate to Armory Alley and leap down. Utilize the Follow Ball for navigation should you need guidance.
Head towards the west corner of the Hangar, near Doug’s hangout, where an NPC named Conner will have a yellow chat icon. He will provide you with the necessary clues to advance.
Next, fast travel to the Industrial District to locate Matthias again. He will suggest heading to Cliffside Beach, which, as you may expect, is swarming with monsters. Be prepared to engage!

Upon arriving, Matthias inadvertently lures a level 20 Grex, easily manageable at your current level. Defeat the creature to continue your quest.
With the monster dealt with, Matthias will spot Aisha once again, but she scampers away. He then prepares food bait—you’ll need to deal with another creature attracted to it.
The next opponent is a level 21 Forfex. Conquer this foe, then fast travel back to NLA’s Administrative District to reunite Matthias with Aisha and complete the mission.
Your rewards for successfully completing the Nine Lives mission are:
- 220 Experience Points
- 13, 000 Currency
- 1 Abyssinian Cat
- Unlocked Ultraslash, a Longsword Art
Afterward, visit the BLADE Barracks and access the Customization Center console, where you will now find a new option for acquiring pets. The Abyssinian cat is your first available companion.
How to Acquire Additional Pets in Xenoblade Chronicles X

To expand your collection of pets, you need to take on Basic Missions that pertain to finding them. For instance, a Basic Mission titled Search Request will become available following your completion of the Nine Lives mission.
Note that Basic Missions are generated randomly. If it does not appear immediately, try exiting the interface and returning to the PC until the mission surfaces.
Completing the Search Request Basic Mission

For the Search Request mission, you will be dispatched to locate an NPC’s missing dog near the Biahno River. If you have the FN Site 103 fast travel point unlocked, use it! Otherwise, travel to FN Sites 101 or 105 as alternative options.
Follow the guidance of the Follow Ball until you spot a Labrador on a rocky ledge. Simply jump down from your location to reach it effortlessly.
Interacting with the puppy completes the mission. Subsequently, the Labrador will be available at the BLADE Barracks’ Customization Center PC, transitioning from a “find my dog” request to your new companion.

It’s worth noting that for heart-to-heart interactions requiring a specific type of pet, such as a cat or dog, you will need to visit the BLADE Barracks periodically to switch between your companions.
In total, players can acquire three cats and three dogs by completing various Basic Missions. The choice of pet does not impact the heart-to-heart events, so feel free to select whichever furry friend you prefer to accompany you on your adventures.
