The Future of Fable: Insights from Xbox Game Studios’ Craig Duncan

After the Xbox Developer Direct 2026 event, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios and former head of Rare, took part in an insightful interview with Gamesradar. A significant portion of the discussion centered around the highly anticipated Fable reboot, which has emerged as the highlight of the showcase. Duncan described Fable as ‘mindblowing’, particularly praising its innovative Living Population feature that enhances player interaction with NPCs in diverse ways.

Duncan highlighted Playground Games’ commitment to excellence, drawing parallels between their success with the Forza Horizon series and their new endeavors with Fable. He expressed his enthusiasm for the game after experimenting with its combat mechanics and the Living Population feature. He noted, “It’s just mind blowing. I’m thrilled that we discussed it during the Developer Direct, as it’s something that will pleasantly surprise players.”

The interview further emphasized the innovative spirit that Playground brings to Fable, as they modernize core concepts from the original trilogy.“Every time I think about the Living Population and its functionalities, I am genuinely amazed, ” Duncan remarked. He concluded that Fable is poised to become an extraordinary RPG that promises significant player engagement and shareability.

Addressing Multiplatform Strategies

In addition to discussing Fable, Duncan candidly addressed some current inconsistencies in Xbox Game Studios’ multiplatform release strategies. During the Xbox Developer Direct, it was revealed that both Fable and Double Fine’s Kiln will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox. In contrast, Forza Horizon 6 is set for an initial release on PC and Xbox only. Duncan acknowledged this variance, stating that Xbox aims to achieve greater consistency in their release plans in the future, although he stressed that flexibility may be necessary depending on each title and its developmental resources.

“There are always practical challenges regarding project timelines, team sizes, and initial development plans, ” Duncan explained.“When strategies evolve, it can complicate matters regarding platform availability. This feedback is valid, and while some releases seem inconsistent, we are committed to improving this aspect.”

For the teams working on Fable, the priority is to reach as many players as possible. Duncan affirmed, “The goal is straightforward: we want as many fans of Fable as possible to enjoy the remarkable efforts of our team.”

Exciting Developments in Fable

In further updates regarding Fable, Playground’s Game Director, Ralph Fulton, confirmed that the game will feature the mockumentary style seen in previous trailers, inspired by the iconic series The Office. Players will have the opportunity to experience this unique narrative style firsthand when the game launches in the Fall of 2026.
