Recently, during AMD’s Q4 earnings call, CEO Lisa Su discussed significant updates regarding the anticipated releases of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console and Valve’s Steam Machine. Su indicated that Valve is set to launch the Steam Machine in early 2026; however, shortly after her announcement, Valve communicated to Steam users the need to delay the finalization of both the shipping schedule and pricing due to an ongoing RAM shortage.
On the subject of the Xbox Next Gen hardware, Lisa Su projected a launch timeframe for next year. Nevertheless, her comments seemed to catch Microsoft sources off guard. As reported by Windows Central, there hasn’t yet been a firm commitment to a 2027 launch. Although these are Microsoft’s aspirations, substantial work remains before any official announcement can be made. According to Windows Central, the challenges are not mechanical but rather relate to the refinement of the underlying operating system and user interface. Presently, 2027 is viewed as a “best case scenario.”
Microsoft’s ambitious vision for the Xbox Next Gen console includes effectively integrating console (Xbox) and PC (Windows) functionalities. The initial step, launching the Xbox handheld, marks the beginning of this integration. The console is anticipated to operate in a dedicated Xbox mode with a console-oriented interface; however, users will have the ability to transition to a full Windows 11 environment, enabling them to run virtually any software. Additionally, much like standard Windows systems, Xbox users will have access to games from various PC platforms, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.
This innovative approach indicates that while the Xbox Next Gen console’s specifications and pricing will align with Microsoft’s core vision, external manufacturers like ASUS and Lenovo will likely develop their own variants, potentially varying in power and price from Microsoft’s flagship model.
As for pricing specifics, the report hints at Microsoft’s intention to position itself within the premium segment, promising what they claim to be the most significant technological advancement to date. However, ongoing memory supply constraints and US tariffs complicate precise pricing at this stage.
Despite potential high launch prices, Microsoft appears unconcerned. The company anticipates that cross-generation play with existing consoles will persist longer than previously seen, allowing gamers to continue enjoying their Xbox Series S or X for several years prior to the release of exclusive titles for the Xbox Next Gen console.
