As a music enthusiast, I am thrilled with the ease of quickly generating playlists on Spotify that cater to various moods or events. Recently, I stumbled upon the innovative Prompted Playlists feature, and it perfectly aligns with what AI-driven playlists should have offered from the outset.
The Evolution of Spotify’s AI Features: Prompted Playlists
In December 2025, Spotify introduced a beta version of Prompted Playlists to select users, aiming to gauge engagement and interest. Fast forward a few months, and this feature is now becoming accessible to all Spotify Premium users in the United States, with a global rollout anticipated soon.
Having had the opportunity to test it as a beta user, I am excited to see Spotify progressing with this feature. Prompted Playlists represent a significant step forward from traditional AI playlists.
While I appreciate Spotify’s AI-generated playlists for their simplicity and the discovery of new tunes, Prompted Playlists offer a unique blend of artificial intelligence and personal curation. They take into account the entirety of your listening history, which allows for a more tailored experience. Each playlist evolves over time, reflecting your tastes more accurately with every listen, essentially turning it into your daily soundtrack while still being focused on the specific prompt you provide.
What excites me the most is the dynamic nature of these playlists, which refresh daily or weekly based on your preferences. Unlike standard AI playlists, which can feel static and tied to a single moment, Prompted Playlists adapt continuously, creating a more personalized music listening journey. Both features allow you to share your musical taste with friends, making it easy to start a session full of shared jamming.
How to Create Your Own Prompted Playlist
To get started with Prompted Playlists, ensure your Spotify app is updated to the latest version and that you have a Premium subscription, as there is currently no information available on whether free users will gain access to this feature.
Launch Spotify on either your mobile device or desktop. For this guide, I’ll be using the Android app. Begin by tapping the + Create button to initiate a new playlist, and select Prompted Playlist.

This step will feel familiar if you’ve created AI playlists before. Enter your prompt, which can be simple or detailed according to your preference. For example, I chose a nostalgic theme focusing on the late 90s, steering clear of top 40 hits while emphasizing lesser-known rock tracks.
Once you’re satisfied with your prompt, click on Generate playlist. I’ll discuss more about updating your playlists shortly.

Generating the playlist might take a few minutes, particularly for longtime Spotify users whose listening histories are extensive. The system utilizes this data to tailor the playlist more effectively to your tastes.
Tailoring Your Spotify Prompted Playlist
To further refine your playlist, tap the three dots next to any song to exclude it from your profile or hide it from the playlist itself, enhancing your Spotify listening experience.

Anytime you access your newly created playlist, you can tap Edit Prompt to make updates. Furthermore, you can set an update schedule by tapping Doesn’t update below your prompt—by default, it won’t update automatically. You can choose to set it to refresh Daily or Weekly; though you can’t specify a time, the default 6 AM setting works for most users.

If the generated playlist isn’t exactly what you envisioned, you can continuously refine your prompt. For example, specifying a number of tracks can help you achieve a desired length; I set my limit to 50 songs, which significantly increased my playlist from 90 minutes to 210 minutes.
Should you wish to receive updates manually or loop in new music between scheduled updates, simply access your Spotify Prompted Playlist and tap Update Now.

In contrast to AI Playlists, where you must either create a new playlist or add tracks to refresh your music offering, this manual update feature can be particularly useful.
Lastly, if you want a more descriptive name for your playlist, simply tap Name & Details located above the playlist.
Considering the Limitations of Prompted Playlists
Initially, I approached Spotify’s Prompted Playlists as though they were just like AI Playlists, which was a misunderstanding of their capabilities.
Instead, think of them as customized daily mixes akin to your Daily Mixes, which Spotify creates based on your listening actions. These daily mixes do not allow user-added music, and similarly, your Prompted Playlists cannot be manually altered after creation.
Since additions are not permitted, you won’t encounter recommendations at the end like with AI Playlists. However, simply refresh your Prompted Playlist to experience new music.
If you find that the perfect playlist emerges and you want to keep it, click on the three dots located below the playlist cover image and select Add to other playlist. This action allows you to either transfer it to an existing playlist or create a new one, thus transforming your Prompted Playlist into a traditional playlist.

I have employed this method numerous times, creating individual Spotify playlists for each Prompted Playlist and transferring my favorite songs to curate ideal themed selections. This flexibility also allows me to explore the Mix feature.
If, for any reason, Spotify’s music recommendations don’t resonate with you, consider exploring alternatives like YouTube Music. Remember, you can always import playlists from YouTube Music into Spotify, giving you the flexibility to choose your preferred music interface.
