Why PayPal Advocates for Chatbot Use in Checkout Processes

Picture a shopping experience where an AI chatbot guides you through the product selection and even handles the checkout on your behalf. That’s the promise from PayPal and Perplexity, but is relying on Perplexity for your shopping truly the best option? Let’s delve into this innovative approach to online retail.

The PayPal and Perplexity Collaboration: Simplifying Holiday Shopping

The checkout experience for many ecommerce sites often leaves much to be desired. This inadequacy prompts the exploration of shopping via an AI chatbot, which highlights a more seamless way to browse and complete purchases. With Perplexity’s AI chatbot, you can search for products efficiently. If something catches your eye from one of the participating retailers, you can wrap up your shopping directly within the chat interface—skipping the traditional steps of visiting the retailer’s website, registering an account, and navigating through the checkout process.

When you’re ready to purchase, payment information is securely processed through PayPal. If you’re an existing PayPal user, simply logging into your account allows you to proceed with the payment effortlessly.

It’s worth noting that neither Perplexity nor PayPal handles your payment information. Instead, Perplexity functions purely as a search tool while PayPal acts as the payment facilitator. The retailer receives the payment directly as if you had made the transaction on their website.

Perplexity isn’t the only AI-driven platform encouraging chat-based shopping. Google has implemented agentic AI capabilities, enabling purchases on behalf of users, aiming to alleviate the stress associated with holiday shopping. Similarly, ChatGPT has launched Instant Checkout to enhance the shopping experience during peak seasons.

However, should you place complete trust in AI to manage your shopping endeavors? Probably not; there are both advantages and drawbacks to consider.

Navigating Chat-Based Purchasing: Two Approaches

With access to over 6, 000 merchants, Perplexity offers two principal purchasing options:

  • Instant Buy – A straightforward process utilizing PayPal.
  • Shop Like a Pro / Buy with Pro – A one-click checkout that provides fewer purchase options.

The Instant Buy feature will be available for all Perplexity users in the U. S.starting with the holiday shopping season in 2025, streamlining the PayPal checkout experience. Simply link your PayPal account once, and you’ll be all set to shop freely. It’s cost-free for all users, though premium subscribers may want to leverage Pro Search for more refined results.

The Shop Like a Pro and Buy with Pro options are exclusive to premium Perplexity subscribers. Users can utilize saved payment details for a quick checkout on select items, though the range of eligible retailers is more restricted than with Instant Buy.

How to Shop on Perplexity and Pay with PayPal

To begin your shopping experience, create free accounts with both Perplexity and PayPal. Once setup is complete, initiate a chat with Perplexity. Whether using the web version or the Comet browser, input detailed search queries to refine your item selection—for example, searching for noise-isolating headphones priced under $50.

Access the Shopping tab to see results displayed in product cards. Look for items denoted with Instant Buy or Shop Like a Pro / Buy With Pro (the latter will only be visible to premium members).

On your first purchase, linking your PayPal account will be necessary for a smooth transaction flow. After initial setup, making future purchases becomes a matter of clicking Instant Buy and confirming the order.

User Protection Through PayPal

A significant advantage of the PayPal and Perplexity partnership is the robust protection provided through PayPal Buyer Protection. This feature safeguards customers against potential fraud or issues related to undelivered or damaged items.

While this offers a greater sense of security, it’s not entirely foolproof. Custom items typically fall outside of this coverage, and claims must be substantiated for approvals, which may not always be successful.

Challenges of Checkout with Perplexity

While the integration of AI in shopping seems promising, potential risks are inherent in this model. AI systems can misinterpret commands, meaning a shopper might inadvertently order an incorrect item or color. Relying on a chatbot for financial operations raises additional concerns, such as the possibility of unwanted purchases or incorrect charges.

Moreover, the security of financial data remains a crucial issue. With AI functioning in the background, questions regarding data storage and usage for training purposes linger.

When I inquired with Perplexity about the risks of allowing AI chatbots to manage checkouts, the responses highlighted valid concerns:

Perplexity's answer to why you shouldn't trust AI chatbots to check out for you.

To ensure a secure shopping experience, it’s advisable to personally navigate to trusted retailer websites and process your payments directly. This way, you maintain control over each aspect of the transaction, minimizing chances for unexpected fees and potentially uncovering exclusive discounts.

For optimal safety, utilizing a credit card for purchases on Perplexity and PayPal is recommended, as credit cards come with built-in protections against fraudulent activities, unlike debit cards or direct account transactions, which lack similar safeguards.

While chatbots can certainly be a helpful tool for product recommendations, it’s wise to complete your purchasing through direct retailer websites. Whether you’re shopping on Perplexity or a different chatbot platform, it’s prudent to approach automated purchasing with caution. Focus on leveraging these technologies for enhanced shopping experiences rather than entrusting them with your entire purchasing process.
