“We’ll give Novak Djokovic an extra one, he deserves it” – Andy Roddick’s mix-up about Serb’s ’25’ Grand Slam titles prompts response from journalist

Andy Roddick playfully bantered with tennis journalist Jon Wertheim after mistakenly mixing up Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam record.

Despite being a top player, Djokovic’s 2024 season has been far from typical. He experienced a surprising defeat to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semifinals and suffered a shocking upset in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters against Luca Nardi.

During the most recent installment of the ‘Served with Andy Roddick’ podcast, Roddick expressed worries about the World No. 1’s scheduling choices, attributing them to his unsteady performance at the beginning of 2024.

“Speaking of longevity, the guys that’s kind of avoiding time as well as anyone ever has is Novak Djokovic. And it’s be kind of an inconsistent start to the year right,”he said (at 31:00).

“Switched up his schedule in Australia, normally just shows up and plays the Aussie Open, went early after playing late into the season last year, playing Davis Cup and having an extended season,”he added.

Despite the American’s error of citing Novak Djokovic as having won 25 Grand Slam titles instead of his actual count of 24, he still acknowledged the Serb’s extensive accomplishments and conceded that he did not require scheduling advice.

“I often find myself sitting in this chair going, ‘Well that’s kind of a weird thing,’ but at the same time I’m also having to remind myself that this guy’s won 25 Grand Slams and what the hell do I know? Like who’s going to tell him anything at this point about decision making and scheduling,”he said.

Upon noticing Andy Roddick’s confusion, Jon Wertheim inquired about the 36-year-old’s Grand Slam record and Roddick struggled to accurately recall the correct number.

“How many Grand Slams?”Wertheim asked.

“It’s just 20… It’s so many Grand Slams,”Roddick replied.

Wertheim proposed granting the Serb an additional Major title, stating that he had rightfully earned it.

“Yeah, I think you gave him an extra one but that’s alright he earned it, we’ll give him 25. We’ll give it to him, we’ll give him an extra one, he deserves it,”he said.

In a humorous move, Andy Roddick asked the producer of his podcast to remove his mistake.

“Sorry 24. Can you dub that over Mike?”he said.

After withdrawing from the Miami Open due to his unexpected loss at the Indian Wells Masters, Novak Djokovic will be making his comeback on April 7 at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters.

The Serb will continue his quest for his first tournament victory of the season at the Masters 1000 event, alongside top players such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and last year’s champion Andrey Rublev.

Prior to his campaign, the Serb spent valuable time with his family in Monaco, participating in a variety of track and field activities with his wife Jelena and children Stefan and Tara.

“Family power like no other,”the Serb captioned his Instagram post.
