After her second-round victory at the Charleston Open, Victoria Azarenka’s son Leo made a surprise appearance during her post-match interview.
The Belarusian joined the WTA 500 tournament after a strong performance in Miami, where she made it to the semifinals before ultimately falling in a three-set match against eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Azarenka began her clay-court swing at the Charleston Open with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second round. Following the match, the two-time Grand Slam champion was joined by her son Leo during her post-match interview with Tennis Channel.
When questioned about her experience of having him accompany her on tour, Azarenka revealed that although she was initially anxious about his presence in the stands, she now thoroughly enjoys it.
“It’s really amazing for Leo first of all to come to come to my matches. I used to be really nervous for him to be out there, but now I feel like he’s watching me. Hopefully he gets a little bit inspired for his sports,”Azarenka told Tennis Channel.
She admitted that her son’s presence provides her with “additional motivation to put in more effort”.
“It gives also extra motivation to like for me to cheer, to try harded, not that I need it, but I do appreciate the ability that he’s able to watch me at work,”Azarenka continued.
In 2016, the Belarusian woman welcomed her son Leo into the world with her former boyfriend Billy McKeague. However, after Wimbledon in 2017, the couple ended their relationship and became involved in a custody dispute over Leo.
