This incident serves as a cautionary tale for tech enthusiasts, highlighting the potential risks associated with high-performance graphics cards. A user’s MSI GeForce RTX 5090 caught fire shortly after powering up his custom-built system. The remarkable event was recorded on camera, although the owner is unfortunately unable to initiate a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) for the damaged component.
MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Catches Fire Upon Power-Up: A User’s Shocking Encounter
Owning a GeForce RTX 5090 can come with unexpected surprises, but few involve catastrophic failure. While issues like the well-documented 16-pin connector melting problem can often lead to eligible replacements, this particular user experienced something far worse during his initial boot-up with the GPU.

The incident unfolded as documented in a Bilibili video. In this alarming clip, the user switched on the newly installed MSI GeForce RTX 5090 alongside a 1300W power supply and, as precautions dictate, recorded the event. Moments after activation, flames erupted from the GPU in multiple locations, showcasing a harrowing scene.

Despite the flames, the user managed to shut down the system quickly enough to prevent further damage; however, the GPU was unusable. Remarkably, the remainder of the computer continued to function normally post-incident. Although burn marks were evident on various components, the user has since substituted the failed RTX 5090 with a GeForce RTX 5060. Experts believe that the short circuit may have originated from issues involving the VRM circuit linked to the VRAM, as noted by @unikoshardware.

Regrettably, the user is unable to file for an RMA due to the MSI GeForce RTX 5090 being effectively banned in China. RMA options are strictly reserved for owners of the RTX 5090 D or RTX 5090 D V2 models. Given that these graphics cards are currently priced around $4000 or more, this situation underscores both the risks of cutting-edge technology and the potential financial implications. Fortunately, the user still has the bulk of his computer components intact; had it been otherwise, the financial loss would have been considerable.
