Understanding Horrified and Embolden Effects in Age of Darkness

Age of Darkness immerses players in a gripping world where they must fend off relentless hordes of monstrous enemies. As you engage in combat against these supernatural foes, your units will experience psychological effects that influence their performance in the battle. Two pivotal statuses in the game are Emboldened and Horrified, which represent the duality of fortitude and fear among your units.

Understanding the Emboldened and Horrified Effects

In Age of Darkness, much like other real-time strategy (RTS) games infused with role-playing game (RPG) elements, unit status modifiers are critical. Among them, the Emboldened and Horrified effects stand out as essential mechanics for players aiming to stave off the encroaching darkness effectively.

The Mechanics of Emboldened and Horrified

As your units combat the Nightmares, they can accumulate a status known as Emboldened. This effect is visually represented by a glowing aura around your units. When a unit is Emboldened, it receives significant benefits, including enhanced health, increased damage, and additional boosts specific to their faction. For instance, members of The Order see increased health, while those in The Rebellion enjoy heightened damage output. Units have an Embolden meter displayed below their health bar; filling this meter activates the buff.

To accelerate the process of gaining the Emboldened status, players can engage in battles and defeat enemies. Additionally, heroes like Edwin can bolster this process with an aura effect that increases Embolden gains by 10%. Players can also acquire Blessings that grant units a daily boost of 25% in Boldness Points.

The Horrified Effect

In stark contrast to the Emboldened status, the Horrified effect signifies a unit’s decline. Units affected by this status experience reduced damage output, impaired movement speed, and slower health regeneration. Horrified status may arise from specific enemy attacks or encounters with The Veil during ominous events known as Death Nights. Notably, units that are currently Emboldened cannot become Horrified.

It is generally advisable for players to minimize the risk of their units becoming Horrified. However, for those commanding the Volatists faction, the Horrified effect offers a unique advantage. Volatist units do not gain the Emboldened buff; instead, they receive enhanced attributes when Horrified. This distinctive mechanic is integral to Volatist gameplay, encouraging players to strategically utilize the Horrified status to their advantage.

Cleansing the Horrified Effect

To effectively remove the Horrified status from your units, position them near prominent light sources such as a Fire Sconce, Fire Tower, or the Keep. These light-emitting structures not only cleanse the Horrified effect but also heal any nearby units that are not engaged in combat.

Considering that Horrified units perform significantly worse in battle, integrating Fire Sconces and Fire Towers into your base defense strategy is crucial. Positioning at least one near your gates ensures that your units remain in optimal condition during sieges, enhancing your chances of survival against the relentless night.
