Microsoft Acknowledges Windows 11 Update Issues: Dark Mode in File Explorer Experiences Unintentional Breaks Leading to White Flashes

Microsoft has released the Windows 11 KB5070311 update, introducing the long-anticipated dark mode for File Explorer’s essential dialogs, including copy, move, and delete operations. However, this update is not without its issues; users have reported an annoying white screen flash occurring during specific activities in dark mode.

According to WindowsLatest, the update, titled “2025-11 Preview Update (KB5070311) (26200.7309), ” is categorized as optional. To install it, users must manually select “Download & Install.” If you proceed with this update, your system will be upgraded to Windows 11 Build 26200.7309 (for version 25H2) or Build 26100.7309 (for version 24H2).

Our installation experience with KB5070311 on a PC running Windows 11 25H2 revealed persistent white screen flashes, affecting most sections of File Explorer, but notably sparing the ribbon and Navigation Pane. Interestingly, we did not encounter this bug in the Insider Build, which raises questions given that Insider Builds are typically expected to have such issues, while the optional updates are generally perceived as stable.

File Explorer’s White Screen Issue in Dark Mode

According to Microsoft’s official statement, after applying the update, the File Explorer may briefly display a blank white screen as it loads files and folders. This issue occurs during various actions, including:

  • Navigation to or from Home or Gallery (including launching Home)
  • Creating a new tab
  • Turning the Details pane on or off
  • Selecting “More details”while copying files

Our tests corroborated that a white flash appears upon launching File Explorer, consistent with Microsoft’s description.

A closer inspection indicates that the flash isn’t a complete screen transition; the top ribbon and left segment of File Explorer retain their dark mode. While creating new tabs, we observed an initial white screen flash, but it seemed to resolve itself during subsequent tests, where the issue was isolated to tab creation.

Switching between various folders generally triggers a white screen, albeit occasionally it transitions smoothly, as shown in the following video:

The Details pane consistently shows a brief white screen flash when toggling its visibility, as does the navigation between Gallery and Home.

Overall, while the white screen does not appear consistently and varies in annoyance, it can be particularly disruptive when using File Explorer in full-screen mode. Notably, using the application in windowed mode does not eliminate the issue.

Importantly, this issue does not manifest in light mode. Given that the update is optional, we suggest postponing installation until a comprehensive fix is provided by Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Efforts to Resolve the Issue

Luckily, Microsoft acknowledges the white screen flashing issue in Windows 11’s File Explorer when utilizing dark mode and has labeled it a “known issue.”This implies that a resolution is likely forthcoming.

As of now, no workarounds or specific causes have been shared by Microsoft. However, the company assures users that they are actively working on a solution, with further updates expected upon resolution.

A Patch Tuesday update is scheduled for December 9, which may potentially address the white screen problem. If unresolved by then, users might anticipate a fix as early as January 2026.

Improvements in Dark Mode for File Explorer

Despite the frustrating white flash issue, KB5070311 represents a significant enhancement for dark mode enthusiasts. Windows 11 has long supported dark mode, but this update finally extends this feature to critical file operations, reducing eye strain typically associated with glaring white dialog boxes.

File Explorer light mode dialogs

In mid-August, developments indicated that legacy file operation dialog boxes were set to receive dark mode during Build 26100.5061 for Dev and Beta Channels. Subsequent testing confirmed that dark mode was implemented across nearly all pertinent dialog boxes, extending beyond just those in File Explorer.

On October 6, Microsoft publicly confirmed the introduction of dark mode for various dialog boxes in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.6772 (Dev Channel).

With the current KB5070311 update, users can expect a more consistent dark mode experience within File Explorer:

Key actions such as copy, move, and delete dialogs have been redesigned in both default and expanded views. Dark mode enhancements have been made to progress bars and chart views for improved readability. Additionally, confirmation dialogs for skip, override, file selection, and multiple error dialogs have received a cohesive visual update.

While testing this new functionality, we confirmed that dark mode is now applicable to delete confirmations, file deletion scenarios, multi-file deletion confirmations, “File In Use” dialogs, and copy/move progress dialogs.

However, it’s worth noting that dark mode has not been implemented for the legacy properties dialog, nor the Windows Run dialog, which, interestingly, already exists in dark mode.

While the rollout of dark mode for operations dialogs is ongoing, users should remain vigilant about encountering the white flashes issue in File Explorer. If you prefer to avoid this problem and can afford to wait, consider delaying this optional update until December 9, when a potential patch may address the white screen bug.
