TSMC is on the brink of transitioning from its trial production phase to full-scale manufacturing, having reportedly achieved a significant milestone with a 60 percent yield rate. As this renowned Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer continues to hone its production capacities to satisfy client demand, the company may soon ramp up its output significantly. Insider reports indicate that TSMC could reach an impressive production level of 50, 000 wafers per month, with optimistic projections suggesting this number could soar to 80, 000 units by the end of 2025.
Production Capabilities at TSMC’s Taiwanese Facilities
Two key facilities in Taiwan, located in Baoshan and Kaohsiung, are central to TSMC’s 2nm chip production efforts. Initially, the Kaohsiung plant targeted a wafer production count of 5, 000, a figure mirrored by its counterpart in Baoshan. Recent insights from @Jukanlosreve and reported by the Economic Daily News reveal that TSMC’s current capabilities allow for an increase to 50, 000 monthly wafers by the year’s end, provided all production processes run smoothly.
If TSMC successfully avoids any production hiccups, it is feasible for them to achieve the aforementioned target of 80, 000 units, though no official statements confirming these projections have been released. TSMC has only indicated that it is making notable progress. Industry experts disclose that the Baoshan facility is equipped to handle 25, 000 wafers per month, implying that the Kaohsiung site would need to manage the balance of 25, 000 units to meet the overall goal.
The demand for advanced 2nm chips is surging—exceeding that for 3nm chips—which makes it increasingly vital for TSMC to expedite its production efforts. Currently, TSMC is outperforming its closest competitor, Samsung, which has only achieved a yield rate of 30 percent with its 2nm GAA technology during its trial phase for the Exynos 2600.
As TSMC advances its production capabilities, the semiconductor landscape continues to evolve, creating opportunities and challenges for companies in this competitive sector.
