Strong Demand for 2-Nanometer Technology Could Propel TSMC’s Production to 200, 000 Wafers Monthly
Recent insights from supply chain sources in Taiwan indicate that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is poised to ramp up its 2-nanometer wafer production to an ambitious 200, 000 units per month by 2027. This expansion is a strategic response to surging market demand, particularly from major technological players such as Apple, NVIDIA, and Intel.
According to the Taiwan Economic Daily, TSMC plans to commence mass production of its 2-nanometer chips within this year. The company anticipates an increase in outputs to approximately 40, 000 wafers monthly by the conclusion of 2025. However, should the demand remain robust, TSMC may amplify its production capacity up to fivefold by the end of the upcoming 2027 timeframe.
This potential growth trajectory is heavily influenced by demand from leading American tech firms and several Taiwanese companies. Notable clients include NVIDIA, Apple, Intel, AMD, and Mediatek. Historically, Apple is prioritized in receiving the initial batches of TSMC’s advanced chips, as their product lines require only moderate performance attributes. Subsequently, companies like AMD and NVIDIA utilize these chips after TSMC has refined their production processes to meet higher performance specifications.

The report further details that an initial production boost of 1.5 times could bring TSMC’s 2-nanometer output to 100, 000 wafers per month by the end of 2026. Following this, if demand sustains its momentum, TSMC may contemplate doubling that figure to a remarkable 200, 000 by the close of 2027.
Achieving this production level would mark TSMC’s 2-nanometer technology as the most prolific among its sub-7-nanometer processes. Such output would likely involve eight production facilities, predominantly leveraging the capabilities of the F22 plant located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
TSMC stands at the forefront of chip fabrication technology, distinguished by its ability to manufacture these cutting-edge 2-nanometer chips at high yields for external clients. While Samsung, TSMC’s primary competitor in South Korea, offers similar products, its yield challenges have allowed TSMC to dominate the global contract chip manufacturing sector.
