Growing up, I was captivated and somewhat intimidated by The Legend of Zelda series. Observing my older cousin navigate through dungeons, wielding Link’s sword against dark forces, filled me with awe.
As I grew older and became capable of playing the games myself, I discovered a wealth of enjoyment in the series. My fondness for the classic top-down gameplay has led me to prefer it over more recent open-world explorations such as Breath of the Wild.
Despite the enduring appeal of Zelda, the franchise only releases new titles every few years. Fortunately, there are remarkable indie games inspired by our green-clad hero that can help fill that gap.
These titles, often referred to as “Zelda-likes, ”represent some of the best alternatives available, whether they feature 2D graphics, 3D landscapes, pixel art, or modern polygonal designs. They are all worthy of a place in your gaming collection.
10 Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas
Questing Across the Water
From the outset, Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas presents itself as a Zelda-inspired adventure. Although it qualifies for this list, some might question its originality.
However, if you can overlook its derivative nature, Oceanhorn offers a captivating storyline centered around the quest to find your missing father. Familiar mechanics such as bomb-throwing, shield usage, and monster combat are all present.
The game includes optional challenges not typically seen in Zelda titles, providing additional fun and engagement—tasks like defeat enemies in one blow, interacting with NPCs, or reading books to gain diamonds that expedite leveling up.
A standout feature of Oceanhorn is its mesmerizing soundtrack, crafted in part by the renowned Nobuo Uematsu. Coupled with solid controls and captivating visuals, this indie title is well worth your time.
9 Lenna’s Inception

Many gamers recognize Bytten Studio primarily for their innovative monster-collecting RPG, Cassette Beasts. However, prior to that title, they developed Lenna’s Inception, a charming Zelda-like adventure.
The game begins with Lenna and a great hero, but things take a dark turn when the hero unexpectedly dies. This tragic event thrusts Lenna into the forefront as she aims to save the day.
Lenna must navigate a glitchy world beset by 8 Archangels impeding her progress. The game’s procedural generation, multiple endings, and cooperative gameplay elements set it apart, transforming the experience into something reminiscent of Cassette Beasts as an adventure game.
8 Hob
Transform Your World
During my visit to PAX West, the stunning artwork of Hob immediately captured my interest. Although it took me years to acquire the game on Switch, I was drawn in by its expansive and beautiful adventure world.
While The Legend of Zelda series excels in storytelling and immersive combat, it’s also lauded for its intricate puzzles—something Hob matches effectively. Players must manipulate the environment through rotation, shifting, and acquiring new abilities such as grappling and warping to progress.
The only downside for me was the absence of a traditional narrative, which left me longing for more context to drive the adventure forward.
7 Reverie
Zelda Heads to New Zealand
In theory, Reverie should have been a resounding success—set in New Zealand with captivating lore and a visually engaging aesthetic.
Yet, upon release, it received a more divided response. Nonetheless, the game excels in various areas, introducing elements inspired by EarthBound and incorporating whimsical boss battles featuring uniquely quirky adversaries.
As you explore Toromi Island, you’ll uncover secrets, delve into its mythology, and even collect stunning feathers along the way, allowing for a delightful adventure filled with Maori legends.
6 Ittle Dew
Who Needs Link?
While the Zelda series is not typically characterized as sexist, Ittle Dew rises from the notion that maybe the princess can take matters into her own hands. This empowering theme is embodied in the game’s protagonist, Ittle Dew.
On a quest alongside her sidekick, Tippsie, they crash-land on an island full of treasures and surprises. While Link may falter, Ittle takes charge, determined to seize her own adventure.
Though not your typical heroine, Ittle Dew offers a wealth of puzzles requiring inventive solutions through unique relic combinations, all wrapped in a vibrant and humorous visual style.
5 Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King

Many of us grew up enchanted by the stories shared by our parents and grandparents. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King takes this familiar theme literally, inviting players to change the narrative as they traverse various adventures.
Throughout the game, you’ll navigate an expansive world dotted with dungeons and formidable foes, including some strange enemies reminiscent of Super Mario Bros.2.
Although it revisits traditional gameplay elements such as boomerangs and bombs, the charming narrative and engaging visuals make it an endearing experience.
4 Hyper Light Drifter
Soulslike Zelda
Initially, I didn’t consider Hyper Light Drifter a true Zelda-like until I reflected further on its mechanics and style. The top-down perspective, the expansive yet perilous world, and the sense of exploration strongly recall the Zelda formula.
However, the game’s dark premise sets it apart from its predecessors. As a Drifter afflicted by a relentless illness, your quest is searching for a cure. The high stakes and swift-paced combat demand strategic thinking as you traverse through dangers and discover hidden passages.
If you’re inclined towards a challenging adventure with a touch more intensity, this title delivers in spades.
3 Nobody Saves the World
Transform Your Hero
Following the success of the Guacamelee! games, DrinkBox Studios surprised everyone by releasing Nobody Saves the World, a top-down procedurally generated adventure that took a significant departure from their previous titles.
This game stands out not just for its quirky art style but also for its humorous narrative elements, along with the intriguing mechanic allowing the character to transform into over 15 different forms!
You can mix various abilities and tackle a constantly evolving dungeon challenge, keeping the gameplay fresh and engaging.
2 Tunic
One Foxy Hero
Tunic clearly draws inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, embodying a similar spirit through its foxy protagonist and adventurous gameplay.
The game pays homage to the classic era of Zelda with clever design elements, such as the “Sacred Book, ”a reconstructible instruction manual offering valuable hints and techniques that enhance the gameplay experience.
With epic boss encounters, stunning visuals, and an unforgettable soundtrack, Tunic stands out as a remarkable tribute to the Zelda franchise.
1 Death’s Door
Reap What You Sow
My initial experience with Death’s Door was nothing short of revelatory. While I had not been familiar with Acid Nerve, my fondness for Devolver led me to try this gem, which swiftly became one of my favorite games and the best Zelda-like title I had encountered in years.
In this game, players take on the role of a Crow tasked with reaping souls and delivering them to the Hall of Doors. However, when your mission goes awry, a grand quest unfolds to recover your lost soul.
Throughout your adventure, you’ll come across bizarre foes, quirky allies, and uncover surprising truths about your organization. If exploration is your passion, this game offers secrets, memorable boss battles, and a multitude of unique powers to wield.
If you haven’t experienced it yet, I highly recommend adding this incredible Zelda-like to your gaming library.
