“The work begins” – Flyweight submission grappling king Mikey Musumeci starts training camp for looming return to action
Mikey Musumeci, a standout in ONE Championship’s submission grappling division, has been a leading force in expanding the sport’s fan base in recent years.
Consistently displaying his extensive knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), ‘Darth Rigatoni’ has consistently impressed with his outstanding performances in the ring, culminating in his well-deserved title of the inaugural ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion.
Despite his success, the American star is still striving for improvement and has sought the guidance of BJJ legends Rubens ‘Cobrinha’ Charles and Laercio Fernandes to continue refining his skills before his highly anticipated return to the ONE Circle. This exciting news was enthusiastically shared by the star on his Instagram account.
“The work begins! 10 weeks until my next match @onechampionship. Every week, I will be driving 5 hours to Los Angeles to train and learn from my coach professor @cobrinhacharles who will be leading my preparation!!!”
He proceeded to say:
“I want to thank also so much professor @laercio_trovao for helping me in my preparation as well; I grew up watching him and have been a big fan for many years! So blessed to have such amazing people in my life!”
Mikey Musumeci achieves third-degree black belt in BJJ
Despite being 27 years old, Musumeci is at the height of his prime and his upcoming opponents will undoubtedly be cautious of his improving BJJ skills, following his recent success.
With Cobrinha’s guidance, Musumeci achieved the rank of third-degree BJJ black belt in February.
Musumeci’s Instagram post above did not reveal his opponent, but his suggestion of fighting in 10 weeks suggests that he may potentially compete at ONE 167 on June 7 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
