The Blood of the Dawnwalker Developer Embraces Witcher Comparisons: “We Have an Exciting Game”

Rebel Wolves’ Upcoming Dark Fantasy RPG: The Blood of the Dawnwalker

Earlier this year, Rebel Wolves announced that their highly anticipated debut dark fantasy action RPG, The Blood of the Dawnwalker, is set to launch in 2026. In recent discussions, CEO and Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz shared insights on The Game Business Show, expressing satisfaction with the game’s direction and the positive feedback received during early focus tests.

Positive Feedback and Team Dynamics

Tomaszkiewicz expressed his confidence in the project’s progress, stating:

“I’m really comfortable. I feel really confident about our game; we’re already past friends-and-family testing and focus tests at professional companies, and the feedback is really good.”

He highlighted the surprisingly smooth recruitment process for the development team. Many talented individuals sought to join Rebel Wolves, likely due to the team’s strong track record and reputation in the industry. This ease of assembling a skilled team is a rarity, particularly in the triple-A game development sphere. To ensure the game runs seamlessly on consoles, the studio partnered with a reliable outsourcing company for optimization from the earliest stages of development.

Game Stability and Player Experience

As development progresses, the stability of the console versions has become a point of pride for the team. Tomaszkiewicz noted:

“Right now, the console [versions] are stable, it’s working really well, and we’re going to certification. I already finished The Blood of Dawnwalker on PS5, and it’s great.”

This stability is crucial, especially considering the challenges typically faced when developing complex triple-A titles. He expressed his surprise at not encountering significant problems during the development phase, an outcome that adds to his optimism regarding the game.

A Unique Blend of Innovation and Tradition

Tomaszkiewicz’s experience as a Senior Designer for the Witcher franchise has undoubtedly influenced the visuals and gameplay of The Blood of Dawnwalker. However, the new title aims to diverge significantly from its inspirations, offering expanded player agency and quest approaches reminiscent of classic pen-and-paper role-playing games.

He elaborated on the risk taken by integrating elements typically found in indie games into a triple-A format, which presents both challenges and opportunities:

“I gathered people who love RPG video games, and from the beginning, we knew we wanted to create a story-driven open-world game with some twists, some elements from indie games inside a triple-A game.”

This ambitious methodology emphasizes creativity and innovation, pushing the boundaries of traditional RPG gameplay. The success of titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Crimson Desert has instilled confidence in the direction Rebel Wolves is taking.

Advancements in Game Development

Another noteworthy aspect of development for The Blood of Dawnwalker is its use of generative AI. However, unlike some recent titles, Rebel Wolves plans to ensure that no AI-generated dialogue remains in the final product, aiming for a more authentic storytelling experience.

Looking Ahead

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, players can expect a fresh take on the genre from Rebel Wolves. With a solid foundation and innovative design principles, The Blood of Dawnwalker aims to carve out its unique identity among fans of dark fantasy RPGs.
