In Metroid Prime 4, players will discover three elemental shots, with the Thunder Shot being the final one they can acquire. This powerful shot not only enables gamers to overcome Thunder Blockers but also energizes a range of static objects dispersed throughout the game world. Therefore, obtaining the Thunder Shot is essential for progressing to the game’s climax. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive guide to securing this crucial ability.
For those who prefer to avoid spoilers, it’s worth noting that the Thunder Shot will only become available after defeating the boss at the Flare Pool’s conclusion.
Locating the Thunder Chip in Metroid Prime 4
Prerequisites for Acquiring the Thunder Chip
Similar to the other elemental shots found in Metroid Prime 4, the Thunder Shot is unlocked by obtaining its corresponding chip. Before embarking on the quest to find the Thunder Chip, players must first achieve the following:
- Unlock Vi-O-La IC Mode located in Volt Forge. This can be done by defeating the Keratos boss in the Ice Belt and acquiring the Psychic Boost Ball.
- Utilize Vi-O-La IC Mode to navigate across the lava pool and enter the Flare Pool facility. Progress through this environment and defeat Phenoros to receive the Psychic Grapple.
Exploring Volt Forge

With the Psychic Grapple in hand, players should return to Volt Forge and descend through Tower 1 until they arrive at the Collapsed Catwalk. Players will notice that this area appears unexplored on the in-game map, making it straightforward to find. To assist with navigation, the location of the Collapsed Catwalk has been clearly marked on the previous map.

Upon reaching the Collapsed Catwalk, players should employ the Psychic Grapple to navigate across the room. Following this route will lead to a chamber filled with Lamorn power cells. In this area, a malfunctioning power cell can be found on the west side. Players need to scan its damaged cover and utilize the Grapple Lasso to extract it, thereby granting access to the Thunder Chip. Players can then interact with the object to collect it.
Be ready for a boss encounter in the room containing the Thunder Chip; it could add an extra challenge to your quest.
Utilizing the Thunder Chip in Metroid Prime 4
Once you’ve successfully obtained the Thunder Chip, your next destination is Myles in Fury Green. Myles will convert the chip into the Thunder Shot. This will feel familiar to players, as they’ve likely undergone a similar process to unlock the Ice Shot and Fire Shot. When the Thunder Shot becomes available, it will automatically be assigned to your d-pad.
Additionally, players can test the Thunder Shot in the Fury Green elemental lock puzzle, located just a few rooms away from Myles—a perfect opportunity to put this new ability into action.
