Star Citizen crowdfunding surpasses $900 million, reaching towards $1 billion

Cloud Imperium Games has dedicated over a decade to the development of its ambitious sci-fi role-playing game, Star Citizen. The funding model primarily relies on passionate players who invest in in-game assets, such as starships and bundles, often totaling thousands of dollars. Recently, the community celebrated a remarkable achievement: the crowdfunding campaign has surpassed the $900 million milestone.

This achievement follows the $800 million mark that was attained in April 2023, showcasing a rapid influx of support, as the latest $100 million was generated within a mere eight-month period. As confirmed by the company’s funding tracker, the community’s contributions have dramatically increased recently, driving the total to over $900 million.

Even as the project remains in alpha, Star Citizen is continuing to receive regular updates throughout 2025. The most recent release, Alpha 4.4, introduced the game’s third star system, Nyx. This system features a dense asteroid belt encircled by largely desolate planets, providing locations for mining, abandoned sites, and the ‘free-town’ landing zone known as Levski.

Earlier updates in the year have added a range of exciting features, including:

  • Orbital lasers
  • Mini sandworms
  • First alien NPC
  • Radiation hazards
  • Dynamic weather effects such as rain
  • A variety of mission chains
  • Abandoned research stations across systems

Looking forward, Cloud Imperium Games has announced plans to release the single-player campaign, Squadron 42, targeting a late 2026 launch following several delays. This campaign boasts a star-studded cast that includes renowned actors such as Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, and Gary Oldman. As of 2023, the campaign reached feature-complete status and is currently undergoing final polishing. However, no release window has been set for the game’s multiplayer component.

If the current growth trajectory continues, Star Citizen could very well approach the lofty goal of $1 billion in crowdfunding by 2026.
