According to industry insider V Scooper, Nintendo is reportedly in discussions to develop a film inspired by its popular sci-fi series, Metroid. The latest buzz indicates that major studios Sony Pictures and Universal Pictures are competing for the rights to bring this project to life.

As noted by Scooper, the battle for the Metroid film rights has been ongoing for several months with no recent updates. Sony appears to be one of the front-runners, while Universal is also vying for the opportunity. Both studios are inclined towards a live-action adaptation, although this direction could evolve as negotiations continue.

Both Sony and Universal have established track records in adapting Nintendo’s intellectual property into successful films. Universal, leveraging its Illumination division, has achieved substantial box office success with the recently released Super Mario films. Meanwhile, Sony has been working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which concluded filming recently.

V Scooper further emphasized that both studios are leaning towards a live-action format for Metroid. This preference suggests that Illumination may not be involved, as their focus is exclusively on animated films. Scooper has a mid-tier reputation among insiders, rated as Tier 2 (“Approved and Mostly Reliable”) within the Marvel Studios subreddit. Additionally, other industry insiders like Daniel Richtman (a.k.a. DanielRPK) have previously hinted at similar rumors, specifically mentioning that the film would center around the Metroid Prime storyline, which has seen recent developments with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

If the rumor about a live-action adaptation solidifies, it will be intriguing to see which actress is cast as the iconic protagonist, Samus Aran. Within the Metroid universe, Samus is described as a tall (6’3″) blonde woman with striking blue eyes. One potential candidate that stands out is Elizabeth Debicki, who shares the same height and could effectively embody the character.
