FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves marks a significant revival in the iconic fighting game series by SNK, attracting considerable attention and acclaim after being absent from the gaming arena for over two decades. This remarkable release has successfully revitalized the franchise, engaging both veteran fans and a new audience alike.
While the initial launch has generated excitement, the journey is just beginning. Following the first season, which reintroduced beloved characters like Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi as well as legendary characters from the Street Fighter franchise, including Ken and Chun-Li, Season 2 promises to elevate the experience further. Fans are eager to see the additions of Wolfgang Krauser, Blue Mary, and Kim Jae Hoon, alongside two exciting mystery characters, one of which is rumored to be Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star).
In anticipation of Season 2, we had the opportunity to engage with FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves Producer Shinya Tamaki and Director Hayato Konya to discuss the upcoming character lineup, significant balance changes slated for January 22, and their vision for the game’s future.
Note: The following interview was conducted via email.
The Comeback of Wolfgang Krauser
Wolfgang Krauser’s return is especially intriguing, as he has not appeared as a playable character in the main timeline for an extended period. How does his comeback intertwine with the existing narrative involving Rock Howard and Geese Howard?
(Hayato Konya): Unfortunately, I can’t reveal too much without spoiling the story, but Krauser’s involvement will be crucial as it dives into “certain issues” regarding Rock and Geese’s relationship. Stay tuned for his exciting release!
Moreover, can fans look forward to a new musical arrangement accompanying his character, or are the sound team exploring a refreshing direction for his South Town debut?
(Konya): I’m afraid I can’t share further details on this yet, but please anticipate his arrival!
The Haunting Shadow of South Town
With Rock Howard’s ongoing struggle to distance himself from his father’s legacy, does the character of Nightmare Geese serve as a haunting vision or merely a gameplay addition to reintegrate this iconic persona?
(Konya): Geese’s demise excludes him from the main storyline, so this time, he appears only as the “Nightmare of South Town.” Even in death, we believe he remains a formidable presence for the inhabitants of South Town.
How has his gameplay evolved since his appearance in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and can players expect to see any “family reunions”in the near future?
(Konya): Our goal was for Jae Hoon to evolve differently than his brother. He will refine and incorporate his father’s techniques in a way that offers a unique gameplay style distinct from his MotW counterpart. If both sons perform well, we may even witness their father reemerging someday.
Monthly Releases and Special Guest Fighters
Without divulging too much, can you disclose if the two mystery challengers in Season 2 align with “legendary fighters”from SNK’s legacy, or will they continue the trend of incorporating guest characters like Ken and Chun-Li from Season 1?
(Shinya Tamaki): We’d like to keep this under wraps for now. We’re confident fans will be thrilled with the revelations, so please stay tuned!
Ken and Chun-Li were designed to seamlessly fit into their SF6 versions adapted for the REV system. Looking ahead, will future guest characters be aligned with the South Town aesthetic, or would they diverge to introduce contrasting styles?
(Tamaki): We believe that characters who resonate with the themes and world of Fatal Fury enhance the experience. However, we’re also keen on challenging our design approach to feature diverse fighting styles and traits in the game. Our priority is to include characters that not only enrich the Fatal Fury universe but also engage fans in meaningful ways.

What motivated the decision to adopt a monthly character release strategy for Season 2? How does your development pipeline facilitate this expedited approach while maintaining production quality? Should players expect a similar frequency of new characters in future seasons?
(Tamaki): As this is our first Fatal Fury title in 26 years, we received overwhelming feedback from fans eager to see their preferred characters. In response, we expanded our development capacity to accommodate this. This allows us to implement a new character monthly starting October 2025. We aim to uphold this pace moving forward, ensuring rapid character additions and updates for our players.
(Tamaki): While the introduction of new characters will continue, the core gameplay mechanics will remain consistent. We hope that players will utilize their honed skills to adapt and enjoy competing with these new characters.
What are some significant changes you’re implementing, and what philosophy drives the forthcoming balance changes?
(Konya): In Season 1, certain “Standard” characters had an overwhelming advantage, and we felt that alternative character concepts didn’t get enough spotlight. As we transition into Season 2, our aim is to make adjustments that enable all character types to thrive.
What was the top request from the community that you are addressing in this upcoming update?
(Tamaki): The upcoming update launching on January 22 takes into account numerous fan requests. With the lengthy wait from fans, we have used this time to fine-tune the game thoroughly—so please look forward to this release!
Looking Ahead: The Future of FATAL FURY
As we anticipate the developments beyond Season 2, what is your long-term vision for the game? Do you envisage City of the Wolves as an evolving platform that can thrive for years to come?
(Tamaki): We are truly grateful for your encouraging words. It has brought us immense joy to revive the iconic Fatal Fury series after 26 years. The positive feedback from the community strengthens our resolve to showcase the captivating world of Fatal Fury to an even broader audience. We remain committed to meeting fan expectations and are eager for the future growth of FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves.
